You can get the PRO-197 for $399.00 at Radio Shack that will easily
handle SD County trunked systems. Radio Shack sells a small mobile
magmount that I have been using in my apartment near a window.

The antenna that comes with the radio should work for close by monitoring.

You can also shop Ham Radio Outlet for Uniden Scanners in SD, you
should check out the latest PSR-600 or BCD996XT.

SD HRO Store

If you can buy local it is best because if you have a problem with the
product you can take it back easily for a replacement or warranty
repair. I'm right now fighting a mail order electronic firm because they
sent me the wrong part. It has been going on for 3 weeks with no
resolution.

This store might sell scanners in Vista, give them a call:

Vista, San Marcos? hehhe, I'd have to pack lunch to go that far :) I'm
right in the middle of the City of SD (University & Texas) and have been
told that the reception is terrible and that there is a lot of usage of all
channels, which bleed over unless you have a 40' high antenna cut to the
exact freq. you want. You're the first guy to say something positive :)
Possible you're right?

I want to listen to the zoo, ships in the bay + the military, transit
authority. I had a scanner a long time ago and found the police boring
because they have very good radio discipline and by the time you look up the
codes they use the conversation is long over.

Thanks,
Bob

Then your best bet is Ham Radio Outlet for Uniden or GRE or of course
your local radio shack. The scanners you want to use are all capable of
monitoring everything you want. With Radio Shack you can try for a while
and take the radio back if it doesn't work for you. One thing that may
help with close by radio stations that create intermod is the
attenuation settings that help with overload, but still let you listen
to stations.
