Which trunk scanner should I get?

Hello,

I am thinking of getting a hand held trunk scanner that I can connect
to my PC to program. I don't think I need digital, because I dont
think it's used in my area. But I know trunk systems are used in one
large city I'd like to listen to.

Looking for something in the $150-$250 range, new or used.

Can anyone suggest models or brands I should look for?

Thanks,

Tommy

The PRO95 is on sale at radioshack for $199 and you can get a BC245 for
about the same price. I would recommend the PRO95.

I have the PRO 95, and from a newbie I find it to be a very good scanner.
It's easy to use, easy enough that I can have my mom use it to listen in on
the Police and the neighbors :)

I haven't had a trouble with it yet, and I've brought it with me to a lot
of places and along on a lot of bike rides. Adding a discriminator output
was easy too. Battery consumption seems fine, although I have nothing to
compare it with. I am using NiMH batteries..

Have you tried both? I have heard Radio Shack's are worse then
Bearcats. But I've also heard that Uniden makes Radio Shack units, so
I don't know which is true. I've heard problmes with the Pro 9x
series having problems with the sound being clear. Is this true?

Basically, why do you recommend the Pro 95 over the BC245XLT? And
what is the difference, besides the RS has 1000 channels and the BC
has 300.

Thanks,

Tommy

I have both and the Pro95 far out preforms the bc245. The pro95 has alfa
tags, 1000 channels, wider freq range, aa batteries. The pro95 is not
made by Uniden it is made by GRE. As far as the sound goes I have never
heard or had a complaint about it.

the only bad thing about
the unit is that you have to use Windows to program it, but
thanks to Don Starr's generosity, you can download his nice Win95
program... see:

Thats not true at all. I had mine up and running in no time at all by
reading the manual to program it. I find it sad that people can't learn
how to use a radio anymore without a computer. I'm not saying that I
don't use the computer too but at least I know how to program all my
radios by hand. As a matter of fact I learn how to use all my radios
before I try the software for them. It's really not that hard.

Sometimes. The rule of thumb, which is not necessarily infallible, it this:
keypad above speaker = made by Uniden
keypad below speaker = made by GRE.

Don't quote me on that.

Thats a very bad and very stupid rule of thumb. I have 4 radios here
that would prove that wrong. I know you said don't quote you but you
should smack whoever told you that.

- that's how i first programmed my p95, but without computer help,
i would find it hard to spend hours upon hours of manual programming
1,000 freqs in and replicating the same freq scan plan over several
scanners... using a conversion program, i can swap freq programming
from the p95 to a p92 and vr-120d and vr-500 and ic-r2...

- in this case, letting 'your fingers do the walking' would drive
one nutz!

It was a simple question - is the answer beyond your grasp or what?
