"Heavy" indicates that it is a large aircraft, and alerts others that it may create wake turbulence. Don't know about the "slick-sided". Just a guess on slick-sided, perhaps it refers to the landing gear being up? These guys are at 20,000 ft. and above checking in with the flight
centers. I can hear 6 centers out here. N8KDV wrote: Burr wrote: Afternoon, What are they talking about when they say "Heavy" or "slick sided" ? I keep wondering and today I ask!!! Burr wrote: Afternoon, What are they talking about when they say "Heavy" or "slick sided" ? I keep wondering and today I ask!!! You add the world "Heavy" to your call sign if the aircraft is capable of having a Max Takeoff Weight of 255,000 lbs or greater. Even if your actual takeoff weight is less than 255,000 lbs as long as the aircraft is capable then you must use Heavy. Example: "Miami Center American 498 Heavy with you level Flight Level 330" This is so that ATC and any aircraft who hears the callsign realizes this is a heavy aircraft. The reason this is important is to because the heavier an aircraft is the more 'wake turbulance' it will generate. Now the term slick-sided is new to me. Never heard this in 16 years of having my pilots license.... Can you recall in what context it was used? Part of a Callsign? The sentence it was used in might give me a clue... Well Burr back in the day slick meant one of two things, i.e. non-military
and or no guns. Sometimes I flew a slick OV-10 sometimes it was "BEAR", i.e. as in loaded for, 2 37mm canons, 2.75" rocket puds and mavericks under both wings. out there where you live you should be getting 29 Palms and March Air Force base, George Air Force base, MCAS Miramar and Miramar Naval Air Station. You have gun and bomb ranges all around you, so if I had to guess i'd say your hearing a guy without a guns. Hi That Other George,
Thanks for the note, I'll bet your right. Sounds like you few in Nam? I rode in Nam, civilian doing things. I remember the dust off's were slicks. I rode a lot in Hues with guys riding the rails, or the Hughes fire fly. Brings back memories! Hope your sitting down for the news I'm about to tell you!!! George AFB is a civilian parking lot for unused airliners, March only has a air reserve wing!!! and, MCAR Miramar is closed but they are talking about basing a chopper wing there!!! GatrGrad68 ...
^ I don't ever recall hearing the term "slick sided." Could it be a commercial aircraft that has not yet had airline markings painted on the side? Frank |

Here's a thought.....What if he's hearing "Slick Sighted"....Isn't a Slick
an attack helicopter? Eric |
It's called a 'slick' because it does not carry armament for attack
purposes. Usually just a machine gun manned by the crew chief is the only weapon carried. "Eric Ferguson" wrote in message m... Here's a thought.....What if he's hearing "Slick Sighted"....Isn't a Slick an attack helicopter? Eric |
Perhaps the phrase refers to a cargo jet, - no windows.
