Well, not that I myself ever actually did it , but most of the time,
both sides were heard. I've been told that sometimes only one side could
be heard, then when it would switch to a new cell and jump freqs, both
sides could be heard, and vice versa.

Most of the 2 ghz. point to point cell "hand off" links are digital.
The landline side transmission probably is digital. There are some analog
cell phones still in use but in time everything will be digital.
