bc9000xlt vs. pro-2045?

I have a pro-2045 and wondered if a 9000 would be a big improvement or ?

I reviewed the PRO-2045 in Feb. 1997 Monitoring Times and
the BC9000XLT in June 1996. I own two BC9000XLTs.

The BC9000XLT is more radio and a better value.
Both models use the same optional CTCSS decoder board
which I recommend.

The following remarks are from my PRO-2045 review:

PRO-2045 vs. BC9000XLT

"...The PRO-2045 vaguely resembles the top line Uniden/Bearcat BC9000XLT,
but there are several differences.
The BC9000XLT is larger and housed in a metal cabinet and frame.
The smaller, lighter PRO-2045 is entirely plastic. The main
circuit board in the BC9000XLT is much larger and many stages are
shielded in separate metal compartments.

"The BC9000XLT tunes these ranges, censored in the PRO-2045:
54 - 108, 174 - 216, 894 - 896.1, and 1000 - 1300 MHz.

"The IF arrangements are very different, too. The BC9000XLT
IFs are 254.4 or 380.7, 58.075, and 5.5 or 0.455 MHz,
depending on the band and mode. The PRO-2045’s lineup
is 380.7, 10.7, and 0.450 MHz.

"Both models incorporate a yellow backlit LCD display,
but BC9000XLT users can dim or disable the backlight.
The BC9000XLT has several selectable tuning step sizes,
alpha display, WFM mode, recorder activator, tape jack, and
500 channels versus 200 in the PRO-2045.
The BC9000XLT lacks preprogrammed weather search and alert.

For me the bc9000xlt is better radio. Since im a big fan of alpha-tag (and
he give 16 chars to display a frequency), general coverage and ctcss the
bc9000xlt is a most usefull radio for me. It's not a yupiteru or a aor but
he is pretty nice, good sound and fast as hell.

I got 2045 ans 2006 and i will chose the bc9000xlt before them both. I will
have to try a bc780 one day ...

The BC9000XLT audio quality is good. The radio has a "high cut"
audio filter key which I don't use.

Like just about every other scanner with a top, bottom, or
side mounted speaker, the best audio is obainted by using an
external speaker pointed at your face.

I miss the old style scanners which contained a speaker
mounted in the front panel and which pointed directly at
the user instead of at the floor or ceiling. :-)

I have 2 PRO-2045's and really like that radio, good audio as well.

I had 1 BC9000XLT. Didn't like it because it received so many Cell phone
images in the 225-400 MHz range it made MilAir receiving worthless. My
closest Cell Phone tower at the time was over 5 miles away!

If you want to monitor MilAir then say away from the 9000XLT, that was
the only complaint however I had regarding that radio.

But recently I've pickup up used (but in great condition) PRO-2045's for
$100, that's an excellent scanner for $100. Great MilAir preformance.

I also find the audio pretty good. Sometime i use a external speaker but the
internal one is ok and the power is very good.

Also, the ctcss board is a must. Actualy i don't have one install and most
of the time i prefer scan with my vx-2r. I will order one in a couple of
weeks.

FYI the BC9000XLT also covers 760-823.9875mhz
The BC780XLT does not.
As far as the images, I've never really had a problem with that. I've had my
9000 since 1996 and love it.
I monitor Milair all the time with it and it performs farely well. So I
guess it depends which batch your 9000 came from.
But George has been monitoring Milair a lot longer than I have, so he
generally knows what he's talking about.

It could be which batch, I've heard others say they've not had the
problem while other have. Might also have to do with how close you are
to 900 MHz towers. Back when I had mine all cell phones were 900 MHz,
today there's a lot of 1900 MHz cellphones if I'm not mistaken.
Possibly the 900 MHz band today isn't as loaded as it was 6-8 years ago.
