SCANNER ANTENNA

Any one have any plans for a scanner antenna that would be good for
154 through the 900 Mhz bands

Actually.... unless you get into building a really complicated multiband
antenna for that far of a spread, my guess is to build one somewhere about
halfway, like around the 400-500Mhz range.

To build a single band antenna, it will work well on the frequency it is
designed for and probably work fairly decent on the bands that are multiples
of that frequency. Other frequencies would probably work but with some
diminished performance. Check out the Arrl Antenna Handbook for a good
source of a variety of antennas. Or try considering purchasing one from
Radio Shack or many other retailers like www.aesham.com or do a search for
ham radio outlet which is another retailer.

Good luck!

Why is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but
it takes a whole box to start a barbecue?

Yup, the discone should work just fine. Don't have a linke to any plans.
Search on Google and see what comes up.

There are commercial versions out there. Radio Shack has (had?) one.
Diamond also makes a nice one. They can be home made however.

The RS *looks* like a Diamond, but in typical RS fashion, it's a cheap knockoff
of inferior construction. (Remember the old CB days when RS antennas looked
like Hy-Gains, but fell apart in the first ice storm?)

Spend the extra $20 and get the Diamond. You'll be glad you did.
