BC 600XLT Dead

I have a Bearcat 600XLT that has no display. The 13.8v power adapter is new.
I hear a hum from the speaker when it is powered on, but no backlight or
display. I also feel heat coming from the voltage regulator (marked 7808),
Any ideas? I have no schematics, so if you can point me to a likely
component it would be much appreciated. I had assumed a bad power diode, but
can't identify it.
