Strange code at 111.18 Mhz

I was using the Aircraft band-scan feature on my Pro-90 when it stopped on
111.18 Mhz. It was just a carrier with a periodic morse code transmission
of the letters SDZ (... -.. --..). Anyone know what these letters could
mean?

Thanks

Luke

Could be a VOR beacon.

Luke
It is probably a VOR at a airport near you.
It is an omni directional radio beacon that aircraft
use for navigation. It transmits a code identification for the
particular airports that they are located at.
Also, 111.18 mhz puts it right in the frequency area they transmit.

Yes, that's what it is, thanks!

This is a VOR identifier. A vor is used for navigation purposes. What
appears to be a continuous carrier is actually a signal that is electrically
rotated to provide bearing information. When tuned in with a VOR receiver
you can determine which radial of the station you are on. Cross referenced
with a second VOR an exact position can be determined. Most are co-located
with a DME which is distance measurement equipment allowing position to be
determined with a single station. I.E. I am 22 miles from the station on the
090 radial.
