Default Mobile Scanner Antenna

I'm in search of a scanner antenna to mount on my Ford Explorer. I
understand that there isn't "the perfect" antenna to receive
everything; although my main scans are fire, police, and CHP (nothing
trunked).

Before I makes any holes in my truck just wanted to make sure I got a
good antenna that would stand up to years of use. Don't want anything
that will rust (have had past bad experience with that). What types of
antennas do the police or CHP use for their scanners?

btw., I currently have an Armstrong 36" mag mount which the mag base
is starting to rust the roof of my truck. Want to change before it
gets any worse.

Thanks in advance!

John,

If all you listening is confined to a single band and you want a permanent
mount find a Motorola (or similar business radio) dealer. The can sell you
( and install if you like) the same antenna they would on a police car. I
did that some years back when all the locals were still on VHF-hi. Went to
the same Motorola shop that I always saw police cars parked at for service.
If I recall it was about $50 for the antenna, not sure about installation as
I did it myself. Was a good quality unit though, never a bit of corrosion
over several years of use.

You don't say if you want another mag mount or not (picking up the magnet
and drying off the bottom occasionally helps stop the 'rust' problem)

I just bought a mag mount scanner antenna (Antenna Specialists I think),
but for a *long* time I used a splitter hooked to the broadcast AM/FM
radio antenna lead. Worked fine but this car is impossible to reach the
back of the radio in the dash :-(

I have been using the glass mounted one from Radio Shack for some time. I
have one on my car as well as my motorhome. They have worked fine without
any problems.

Antenna Specialists makes a nice little multicoupler, for about
$40 or so (from Universal Radio), that allows you to use your AM/FM
broadcast antenna for both the good-times radio and the scanner. I'm
using one in my van. Works great! Have a look at this link for their
model MON-63.

Universal's sale link for it can be found here.

Happy hunting no matter what you decide.
