Can anybody tell me if the Uniden BC860XLT has a discriminator? If it
does, how can I identify it?

mike January 23rd 04 08:53 PM

all FM receivers have a discriminator!
u can't list to FM without one!
you will usually find it close to the 455kHz ceramic filter
look at then in the maplin cat.

Almost no FM receivers have a discrimimator now. The discriminator is a
specific type of circuit. It has mostly been replaced by ICs that use other
methods of detecting FM. He is looking for a point to take the output just
after whatever type of detector is being used.

Here is a list of scanners and chips that someone posted in the past. If
your scanner is not on it , look for an IC that matches any of the ones
listed. Take your signal off the baseband audio pin.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

There is a growing interest in tapping the baseband audio out of
various scanners for decoding of a variety of esoteric signals,
including CTCSS, SCA, FSK, RTTY, FAX, etc. By and large, such
signals cannot be take from TAPE REC jacks, headphone jacks, and
EXT SPEAKER jacks because of the voice-band filtering that is done
between the signal source and these output jacks.

Therefore, it is necessary to tap the "baseband audio" directly
at the output of the discriminator chip for your scanner. The
below Table shows a list of scanners, the discriminator chip(s)
used in the scanner, circuit symbols of those chips, and three
pins of general interest on the chips: RF-Input, Scan Control,
and, of course, the baseband audio pin.

Even though your scanner may not be listed, if you can find its
discriminator chip, it will be listed with one or more scanners
below, the pins of which will be the same for your unlisted scanner!
Corrections and additions to this list are requested. See my email
and other addresses at the end of this file.

Thanks. Instead of mine it lists the BC855XLT, which is basically the same
thing with fewer bells and whistles. :)
