Help !! 2 Antennas/1 Scanner
 

Hello to the group. I have just purchased a Uniden 796D for home use and
need your valuable input. I've just purchased an Antenex 3db 800 meg
omni-directional base antenna, that I plan on installing on my roof, for
optimum reception (and Belden 9913 cable as well). I already have a VHF/UHF
base antenna up on the roof and I would like to run both antennas to the
796D. Can I get by with just using a T-connector for both antennas or do I
need to go with some kind of duplexer? If any of you have done something
like this, I would like to hear your ideas.

Yes you can just T them but you may loose some signal in the T connector.
The losses will be minimal if at all. A duplexer is for connecting 2
transmitters to 1 antenna but serves no purpose for receivers.

Hi Chris.
Using a T-connector might work or might not. Just give it a try.
Maybe it will cause some loss or improvement depending on interaction or
interference between the antennas in some frequency ranges....
Otherwise I would recommend a manually antenna switch to feed 2 or more
antennas to one (T)RX. It's a common part on the HAM-market.
Cheaper ones use PL-connectors better ones N-connectors. I've not seen
swirtches with BNC.
For RX only a divice-switch witch RCA/cinch connectors for audio will
work fine. With that you need only to use the left or the right channel
connectors. Or feed another pair of antennas to another RX.
In all cases you may need some adaptors or the right connectors fitted
to your cables.

I have similar antennas to setup. I am going to try a solution I have
thought up. Will be up on the roof doing it tomorrow. I am going to try two
TV amps. One standard VHF/UHF one and then another which diplexes VHF/UHF
and Band 5 UHF (ie. 600MHz +). The output of the VHF/UHF amp goes into the
Band 5 amp on the VHF/UHF input. The two will be powered by the one inline
power supply. They are GME Kingray devices. These are local Aussie amps.
There are similar VHF/UHF and Band 5 ones in US and Europe.

Well it all sounds well in theory. The main thing is that I hope I don't get
too much intermod etc with wrong signals being amplified. I might just not
have the VHF/UHF amp but I would like to as mixing it in with the other amp
takes about 1dB out.
