Jim, look at the Radio Shack Pro-95 if you don't need digital
capabilities. It's relatively inexpensive, easy to program with
free/shareware software, and works on trunked and non-trunked systems.
If it's not what you want, RS has a good return policy. If you don't
need trunked, RS sells even cheaper scanners.

DRC, Got a list of frequencies for your area? I'll be in Harrison

I was tempted to consider this model. However, it doesn't have total
coverage in frequency range. My other choice would be ICOM R5 due to
its small size and total coverage (less cellular). If I do get R5,
then would I not be able to listen to trunked signals?

If everyone starts using trunked, then buying scanner that wouldn't
decode trunked signals would be a bad investment. Once again, I want
to buy a scanner that decodes "most" signals surrounding my periphery.
Who gave them right to invade my space with their stealth signals?

You may want to reconsider the PRO-95 if you want to listen to a
trunking system. The US R5 has a good portion of the 800 band blocked
and may keep you from hearing the trunking freqs in your area. If it
does let you hear them, you still will not be able to follow the
conversations.

that's another one of the faults of the IC-R3. It doesn't do trunk-tracking.

I bought the Uniden BC785D and quite happy with it. Along with TrunkTracker
software this has been a fun scanner so far.

More information needs to be known before anyone can suggest a scanner.

1. What frequency ranges will you be listening to?
2. Will you need to listen to trunked or digital transmissions?
3. How many channels are the minimum?
4. Do you need AM capabilities? (Listening to air band?)

I guess any normal scanner would pick up FM/AM/SSB modes. I don't
want to just hear hiss or crackles on 440.650 MHz for instance.

I want to listen to things that are not meant to be heard. :-)

Good luck on finding a receiver that will receive encrypted transmission. I
don't believe one exists.
