that's nothing. I once posted a topic about the Batman tv series in a newsgroup
for the Batman tv series and was banned from the newsgroup fo it for being
"off-topic"

How is a post about the Batman tv show off-topic in a newsgroup made
specifically for posts about tthe Batman tv show?

And no, there were not any profanities or such things in my posts there.

At least you didn't get banned.

How the hell is a 'ban' supposed to be enforced ?

It wasn't off topic to the group, but is was off-topic to the question. That
is probably why some people had a go at you.

The question asked about the workings of trunked radio systems and you
started talking about RadioShack.

I didn't mind. It made for interesting reading :)

How do you get banned from a newsgroup? It's impossible.

If it's a moderated newsgroup, as many are, the moderator can
simply refuse to put your posts onto the group.

It was on a webtv newsgroup. webtv also has what is known as "club newsgroups".
These are moderated newsgroups in which the moderator can ban you from the
newsgroup by using the code from your webtv box, so that you're not able to
post there even if you try to.

no it isn't impossible. It was an alt.discuss webtv newsgroup, firewalled
within webtv, separated from the usenet newsgroups, although webtv (msntv)
claims that the alt.discuss newsgroups are not part of webtv and claims that
they are part of usenet.

true. However, on webtv, it works by banning the boxes by using the code on
your box.

Once the owner of a cerain club group sends the code, your webtv box is no
longer able to post to that particular newsgroup.

It gets banned by box, so even if there's other users on your box who did not
do anything wrong or did not make off-topic posts, they can't post in that
particular newsgroup, either.

The trouble is that most of the people that buy from RS are Trailer Trash
and putting down RS is like insulting the trailer park. They will strap on
the coveralls, light up the Corn-cob pipe and grab the 12 gage to defend it.

Let's see. He was posting to a Batman (!) group on WebTV and is now posting
from a Compuserve account. That tells me all I need to know about his
technical prowess, although I really expected him to be posting from AOL.

I guess that might explain it.
I've never been unfortunate enough to have to resort to webtv.
