ISO the perfect scanner...what is your choice????
Now that I have your attention,,,
I am not new to scanning (used to have a pro 2006 way back) but it has been some time (probably a good 10 years) since I was into scanning. Now things have settled down in my crazy life and I recently found my old handheld pro 25 and plugged in a few frequencies from the new city I am living in (east lansing michigan 48823), I forgot how much I missed just having the scanner on now and then, so far its been fun but I miss my base unit. Since it has been a good 10 years or so, what are the newer better base units that might offer things like display name (that you can program in text on), and what new base models/makers cover whatever frequency ranges are currently being used (the most) these days... I never got into anything that hooked upto the computer but that would be neat too (to program it in off the pc if possible thru usb or something?) and I never got into (or understood) the whole concept of trunk tracking or anything beyond enter this frequency and hear this fire or police department (using the radioshack books). I figured if I came in here and asked around I would get some suggestions on what the newer models offer and or what might be a good choice for someone wanting to get back into scanning after all these years. Looking to spend under $1000 for something that might do 75% of what I am hoping since it has been a good 10 years here since I used a scanner .. Bill |
Hi Bill
Look at the Pro-96 made by GRE and for sale at Radio Shack for $500, now with a $75 off coupon, new cost $425 + tax. The State Police in Michigan are on 800 mhz digital, the Pro-96 will decode and track this! The scanner is already programed with most large cities, but is very easy to program all you need for the trucking is to program in the control frequency, which you can get he http://www.radioreference.com http://my.core.com/~lbutler/tracker.html http://radiowurx.com/mpscs/ Click on the blue flag for you town and it shows the frequencies needed Bill wrote: Now that I have your attention,,, I am not new to scanning (used to have a pro 2006 way back) but it has been some time (probably a good 10 years) since I was into scanning. Almost forgot
For programing You can make your own cable or buy one from many sources. The best programing software is from Don Star called Win-96 and only cost $30 http://www.starrsoft.com/ Bill wrote: Now that I have your attention,,, I am not new to scanning (used to have a pro 2006 way back) but it has been some time (probably a good 10 years) since I was into scanning. I see you were looking for a base unit.
Sorry the Pro-96 is a handheld. It's still a great radio! Bill wrote: Thanks for the suggestions! yeah I was looking for a base unit (mainly for
readout and since I dont go mobile with it)... but the pro 96 did look like a cool radio... Actually that BC796D sure looks sweet too, Donald, you mentioned about a new Uniden in about a month, any leaked info about it (what it may offer above and or beyond what is on the market today and now?). I'm trying to buy a BC796D, so as soon as it arrives at my house, something better will come out and drive down the price... ;-) -Donald Bill wrote: yeah I was looking for a base unit (mainly for readout and since I dont go mobile with it)... but the pro 96 did look like a cool radio...
