Question about VHF/UHF yagi polarization
 

I could probably find an answer if I searched, but I'll throw it out
anyway...

If a yagi should be set up for vertical polorization to capture the best
signal, why are TV yagis set up for horizontal polarization? Shouldn't it
be the same for both signals? Just wondering...

What _both_ signals?

TV-signals are sent in horizontal polarisation others (like FM-radio) in
vertikal polarisation. So it's the way it is...

Was not aware of this...I thought TV was polarized vertically also. Now
it seems so clear.

predominantly TV transmitters broadcast using horizontal polarisation, this
gives a better range for less power with less likelihood of interference.
mainly on historical grounds, as few TV's were portable when the system was
devised, now however, not all are horizontal, and many are vertical.
FM radio is mainly mixed (both) because we have car & portable radios with
the FM band this last 40yrs

now as for your yagi what is it for?

if it's for use with a scanner, you'd do well to actually slant it! though
perhaps vertical will suit best unless you wish to listen to hams or outside
the UK where radio waves & polarisation & the outer earth layers do funny
things over 100+ miles and horz is normally better

they are orientated horizontal if the station is transmitting horizontal
and most mobiles are verticaly polarised and so should your antenna be for
mobiles for your scanner
