rebroadcast scanner audio over internet laws

I see a bunch of sites that rebroadcast scanner audio from the city they
live in.
I wonder if this is actually legal to do?
The law states that the communications you hear are only intended for the
listening party and the contents may not be divulged.

How is it that so many people broadcast live scanner audio?
I ask because I'd like to do the same but it seems as though it is illegal
to do so.

Can anyone give me the facts on this?

Thanks Much!

It is unencrypted.
It is a single channel repeater that is digital apco25.
I really doubt I'd have any issues with phone or private interconnects being
a single channel system.
I'm also not really looking for a listening audience.
It is more for a few local friends that do not own digital radios.
I guess I will make the system available but I think I'll hide the link and
also require logon.
Then I should be OK unless my friends give out the info!

I still question the legality however.

As long as it is UNENCYRPTED government radio communications then you
can do whatever you like with it. However, you better careful about
stray phone calls or private communications. There were a lot more
live scanners on the Internet years ago, but the practice has faded
and you will find very little interest in it if you set one up.

Check with the FCC. I know many people do it, but the way I read it, it may
not be legal.

Hey John jon,

I'd think you'd better take a second look. I think you'll find more than
ever actually. Actually, there's more out there that are listed on these
following links.

I think if anything this has actually taken off and has become quite
popular.

Ralph, where are you from? And which area are you thinking of putting
online. There's many out there that may be interested, more than just your
friends.

Here take a look.

I think I may do as you suggested.

I'm also going to check into what Never anonymous Bud mentioned as well.

The law was changed (inadvertently) some years ago.
Search for the decision in the appeal of the US vs. Larry Gass in
Oklahoma.

Thanks Everyone
Ralph

Ralphy buddy, nothing to worry about.

Numerous agencies across the US/Canada/and Int'l are doing this. Check out
the previous posts.

Please see http://www.geocities.com/45peter/gass.html for information
about the legality of intercepting and divulging governmental radio
communications. Please read over the 2 decisions in the Gass case.

Since Judge Cook issued this decision in the Gass case, I have not
heard of any scannerists being charged with any Federal crimes. Peter

That is the info I have been looking for as mentioned by someone else in
this thread.
Thanks Much!
