Using tv antenna

What would plugging my handheld old scanner to my tower mounted tv
antenna do? I mean, I assume it would work better than the rubber duck
antenna I currently have wouldnt it? Would I be able to pick up the 440
mhz band?

a TV antenna makes a good directional scanner antenna. You will need to
change the polarization from horizontal to vertical. 440 MHz is UHF and
it'll cover great! The slight mismatch from 50 ohms to 75 ohms is trivial.

How do I change the polarization?

You have to loosen the antenna bolts that hold it to the mast and turn
the elements vertical. If this is not possible because of the design, it
is possible to get a small piece of mast and bend it to a right angle.
This might be hard to do without kinking the pipe.

Bending small thickness mast without kinking is easy if you first fill it
with sand.
