1/4 or 5/8

Is ther much difference in the performance of a 1/4 wave ground plane
vs a 5/8? For any freqnecy but especially vhf?

The difference is that a 5/8~ has a lower angle than a 1/4~ thus reaching
out further. so for example take a doughnut and smash it and you have
converted from a 1/4 to a 5/8

Besides the lower take-off angle, in theory you would also get some gain
over the 1/4-wave groundplane if the 5/8 had a proper ground plane
itself--that is assuming it has been properly matched. The 5/8-wave has
some intrinsic reactance that needs to be tuned out with a simple network
for a proper match to the transceiver. For receive only, I'm not sure how
critical the match is.
