PerCon WTF?

I subscribed to Spectrum online last Tues and have not received an ID or
password yet. I've sent them a couple of emails, no reply so far and I even
called their support number, all I get is voice mail. At least they haven't
charged my credit card yet.

Does anyone know what the deal is? I've always heard good things about them,
I'm not too impressed thus far.

They went down hill after they got their government contract to supply
various
databases to various agencies. Right after they got that the Spectrum CD
was
killed and only the Pro DB remained. Thank fully others have stepped in to
supply a similar product at the same price point for those not needing the
Pro
DB.

Who else offers a freq database?

I already have police call IMO, other than public safety there's not much
else on the CD or in the book that is very interesting.

Police Call was good in its day, its day has past written and CD.

For a spectrum like product I suggest you look at:

http://www.fccdata.com

This CD is all license data EXCEPT nexhell, which you don't need any way,
BUT it
does require a little effort to use on the end users part. Either a
version of
Dbase or follow the on CD instructions to create a Percon Spectrum
compatible
version or mslop access file.

Some times this shows up on EBay as well and you can get it at quite a
savings.

Hey thanks,

I finally received an email from PerCon this last Monday (guess they where
on vacation) with User ID and Password. I wouldn't have made a fuss about it
if the printed receipt didn't say "Your User ID and Password will be
e-mailed to you within one business day." That Thurs I sent out an e-mail to
them and didn't hear back so I was wondering if they'd gone out of business.

I was all geeked up to spend the weekend putting it all together and
programming my scanner too.

Anyhow, I will definitely check out the FCC Data CD. I'm really seeing what
I've been missing with the amount of info I'm getting from PerCon. And
$19-$30 is definitely within my budget. I know I could've found much of this
on the FCC site, but getting it into a comprehensive format would've been a
real chore.

One question about the FCC CD, I never had the PerCon CD to install, so is
it possible to create the mslop access file without ever having a owned a
PerCon product?

Thank you for your suggestions.

I've pulled daily FCC license transactions for years and manually go
through them as I simply don't have the time to write something that
would automate this process other than its daily down load. I can
search thru the file pretty quick for the areas of interest and move
on.

Theres tons of other data on there if it were my full time job to be

If you weren't half stupid, you'd grasp the concept that the site is for
searching for RECENT CHANGES ONLY. It's not a complete database...

Considering the data in the search is all NEW data that was published on the
FCC site between 8/9/05 and 8/14/05, I'd guess that it's FAR from being "out
of date," as you claim. I'd actually have to say that it's probably MORE
IN-DATE than your 6 month old Database CD you trying to sell illegal copies

What type of interface does it have? Can I search by State, County, City, RS

What would be the difference if it is just a big file thrown on a CD without

Yes they add $5.00 to mail a CD because the CD envelopes cost $1.20 and
someone has to put $1.45 worth of postage on it and then take them all to
the post office. so in todays world of $3.50 a gal gas don't you think that
guy should get at least 1gal for doing the jub or do you think everything
should be free to you?? The interface is bDase they recompile it from the

Bull, unless you're buying them from yourself. Mailers cost about a

$1.45? A CD in a mailer only weighs barely 2 ounces (actually 1 gram
less). That would be $0.60. The $0.85 is just part of the rip-off

them at and ask about buying the database.

Yup, you could, but why? You can download the information, UPDATED WEEKLY,
off their website for FREE...

...and it comes in a .pdf mormat that
will not work with any spreadsheet or bDase program you can figurout how
to use it.

Wrong, again. It comes as a .ZIP file that contains numerous ".dat" (text)
files, that can easily be imported into ANY database program, provided you
know how to use one. It can then be exported into whatever format you'd
like it to be in... (Great spelling, again, BTW!)

In fact there is nothing to download at http://www.fcc.gov but
"Headlines" in ether Word or Acrobat.

WRONG, you're just too stupid to find it I guess...

If this were a moderated newsgroup ... :)

I especially love this part:

Now go
back to playing your computer racing game and leave the big boys alone.

What he doesn't know is that he aimed that at someone who's most
likely old enough to be his father, and who has been dealing with the
FCC since before he was born. My first phone ticket, which hasn't
gone by that name in decades, is older than he is.

But let's not confuse him by giving him facts. Let the little boy run
his lemonade stand. Some people might like unsweetened lemonade.

Al,

You might be older, but if boh of you continue to engage each other in your
dumb spat, you're clearly not any wiser than him.

no moron there is nothiung at http://www.fcc.gov that will let you
download the complete FCC frequency database covering all 50 US
States plus all US territories

Then I guess my IP just triggers something special at the site.
Advertising on a non-advertising newsgroup is spamming - making up
lies to support your "product" just makes you look bad.

the other guys asking you to post that link where, The Other George,
That Other Guy, No Spam oh and me. thats 4 people

You mean your 4 addresses? Or are they your partners?

and yet you have still not posted a link to this free download??

I did, spamming liar.

the URL of where to download this fictional free file you keep

And a link to the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau (right side) ,
then link to Dabases (left side) and from there one ends up at
http://wireless.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/wtb-datadump.pl
but it is true the format pf the downloaded files is not at all
friendly and one must be good at database work to use it making most
much much better off buying someone elses CDROM where they have put it
in a more useable form. (If you have never worked with databases, do
not bother downloading the files from the site as you will not know
what to do with them.)

Well ever your site does not have the 2 files we get from the FCC when we
buy there database from them. What we get comes on 2 CD's and it is in .pdf
formate, we convert it to .dbf dBASE format that can be read with any dBase
type program. On our CD is a link to a free download of the old Visual
dBASE 7.5 and it works beautifully for doing anything you want to do with a
..dbf file. The files the FCC sends us are both bigger then 700Meg and to
convert them from .pdf to .dbf takes just under 18hr.

And yes I do get a bit ****ed off when some moron comes on telling folks
it's free it's free when we just shelled out $75.95 for the CD's and when 4
people ask him for the like to these two 724meg and 729meg files he writes
some bull **** like fcc.gov.. You can search fcc.gov from now tell hell
freezes over and not find there complete lcensing database for download,
i. e. if they send it to us on two CD's, the total file would be 1.453Gig
to download. So a guy on a 56K dial up would be download for the next two
weeks. It **** me off even more when this thread was a guy asking for any
other date base because he was having a problem accessing the one he just
paid for, and the moron say spamer spamer spamer.. God what a 5 year old..
Pointing the gey to a good priced database is not spaming.. I guess he
thinks every one should pay for a data base and work for hours to convert
it and set it up so even he can use it then offer it for free "NOT"

PerCon WTF?

Who else offers a freq database?

You can go straight to the FCC and get the same thing you used to get from
PerCon and much more. PerCon stopped doing their CDs after the FCC put this
site up. There's no need for them if you're just a scanner hobbyist looking
for frequencies.

If you're knowledgeable about databases, you can even download the entire
raw database into your own database and build your own queries to do
anything you want. They even send out daily updates so you can keep your
database synchronized with the FCC.

It's funny to think that back in the 1980s I made the trip to Chicago to
look at the microfiche.

Check out:

It's all there...

The latest info from the FCC as of 6 months ago? From the web site.
And please don't say download it, it's a 730Meg .dbf file that is

not offered for download anywhere. So please tell us all where to get
this database for free.
Stop spamming the ng.

The database is available at the FCC website (http://www.fcc.gov) for
free download.

That *you* can't load it into some database program and have a
ready-made searchable system is your failing, not mine. I'm perfectly
capable of loading raw data into a few dozen tables and constructing
some SQL queries to find what I want.

At least 3 people asked you to post this free download
site

And I did - in this post and previous ones. (BTW, your sock puppets
aren't "people".)

I mean you say it's a free download so whats the URL?? where is this

Can't find it? Try using your fingers. Or, if you can find it, your
brain.
