Use "Tape Out" Or "Ext Speaker" Output For PC's Line-In ? And, acars question

Hello:

Have a 780.

Have never played with this, so would appreciate some help, very much.
Still consider myself a newbie with the 780, and scanning in general.

I wish to decode some aero acars messages with my PC.
Therefore, I have to set my 780 to 131.550 AM and feed the output into
the Line-In on my PC's soundcard.

Not sure what to grab from the radio to do this.

Should I use the Ext Speaker jack, or the Tape Out ? Or,... ?

BTW:

What are the differences in output volt levels, etc. for the two ?

Anyone try scanning a few (e.g., 6) acars freq's., and rely on the Squelch
being fast enough to grab the full message if one does appear on on of these
scanned channels ?

Thanks,
B.

Ext. Speaker is variable with the volume control, tape out is
constant. If you use tape out you can turn the volume all the way
down. They're both line level.

I would use the tape-out.

I have tried that in the past, but that would require all signals having the
same strength. I recomend using only the primary freq(s) since the scanner
mostly stops at those.

Talk to you later ... Hans

I also have a BC780 and someone commented on the Tape Out jack
being constant volume at line level. Unless I accidentally plugged in
to the Speaker jack, I thought I remember that the Tape Out jack
volume varied with the Volume control right along with the speaker
output. I feed speaker audio in to my computer sound card, but I just
set the volume control and try not to bump it later. The only other
thing I remember is that you have to enable the recorder output on a
channel by channel basis. If there is a way to get a fixed level out
of that jack, I may revisit its use as it would make setting up the
computer to record much easier.

It shouldn't. It should be line level, which is about the level at
the top of the volume control.

Well, I am at home and I checked again and my sometimes
failing memory was correct. If you do enable the Tape output, you get
audio, all right, and it is fine, but it is effected by the volume
control just like the speaker. It also appears to have a higher
impedance and really didn't sound as good as it does through the
speaker. You also hear the speaker which may or may not be a problem.

I guess they've changed the design from the 780 to the current one.
