So where are these SSB and pirate stations?

I'm having fun with my new Sangean ATS909, but so far I listen to
official broadcasters only whose schedule I get on the Internet.

My ATS909 does SSB which seems to be a must for a "real" shortwave
radio. But, how do I find out which stations transmit on an SSB?

Probably the majority of SSB transmissions are radio amateurs. Try:

3750-4000KHz, LSB, best at night
7150-7300KHz, LSB, best during the day (this band is full of regular AM
broadcasters at night)
14150-14350KHz, USB, best during the day

When the sunspots come back around, several higher bands will also be
productive.
