camping out on WWVA doorstep a bad idea?

My present orders call for an overnight stay in Washington, Pa which is
about 20-30miles from WWVA. WWVA is 50Kw so I am rethinking that
waypoint. Primary objective for this mission is to log as many 1kw and
below mom & pop AM radio stations across this great nation of ours.
Should I take a more southerly route thru Virginia, Kentucky and
Tennessee for better AM DX operations?

Regards,
NEO

I grew up in Wheeling. You could pretty much get WWVA by clipping your
headphones to your bedsprings in those days!

Seriously, I had several little crystal sets, and WWVA was all you could
get. Every other local was drowned out.

I used to be able to get them every night where I live now in Florida, but I
haven't heard them in years. They must have changed their antenna pattern
or something.

Hi Mike,
I'm not worried about receiving WWVA, I am looking to log stations 1KW
or less. I'm afraid camping out 20 miles from WWVA might make catching
the little signals very difficult. I am only newbie at this so I was
hoping I might catch the ear of an expert. The vehicle I am driving is
a 1986 Dodge slant 6 with near 200k miles. I think the southerly route
through the Appalachian Mountain range might be a better route for
catching stations, but it will put a lot of stress on the truck. So
there lies the decision. I suppose if others on the board think it to
be a problem then maybe I should route my whole trip to avoid the large
powerhouse stations. RHF & Mr Lector both posted very helpful links
that points out all the Big ones. ve3 suggested I stay at KOA
campgrounds for safety sake which I will take as good advice. So
possibilities are then somewhat limited. While I just purchased a
marginally roadworthy cap for my pickup I don't think pulling into a
rest area and sleeping in the back is such a safe idea. I could awaken
with my vehicle underway and have to smash my way through a couple
windows to regain control of the vehicle.

regards,
NEO

PS thanks Cuhulin for your thoughtful response. Too bad I'm not
traveling a little farther south.

Yeah, I understand. Just seeing WWVA brought back memories!

If I were you I would go further south thru the mountains also. If you
stay on the Interstates it won't be too hard on your vehicle, but the West
Virginia backroads are absolutely notorious for killing front end alignments
and shocks.

Thanks for helping out her if I could just run this by you one more
time. I am having a difficult time to make up my mind - but you were
the first to respond with some good advice. I agree I think the
southerly route would be quite a bit better for picking out some nice
low power stations. On the other hand I am more worried about the
hills taking a toll on the motor and tranny than the front end. I
would think some of those hills may be fairly large and long. Exact
route would be down 81 from Chambersburg, PA. Stopovers at Natural
Bridge, VA. Boone, NC, and Barbourville, KY before heading into
illinois. Can you comment on this route?

NEO
