1206KHz Radio France Info - near Bordeaux, Power 300 kW

This is it boys and girls. If you are not now listening for DX on LW/MW or
the low end of SW your not DXing. This DX season will be the peak for LW/MW
low SW DX . The next peak will not occur for another 11 years.

Heard many heterodynes this past evening in between the N.American
broadcasters. That can only mean one thing at my location - Trans-Atlantic
DX!

In all my 20+ years of "casual DXing" I have never heard Trans-Atlantic DX
on the AM MW band before. I wouldn't ever expect to at my location in the
Upper-Midwest (USA). But, one Het on 1206 kHz was especially strong here.
So I decided to stick with it. From about 0300 UTC I kept watch. I could
briefly hear very weak audio fading in and out every few minutes or so. At
first I thought it was in Spanish and thinking perhaps it was an image of a
local. But that did not compute. I kept rechecking that it was indeed a
Het by rotating the Loop for peak signal and tuning in SSB. The compass
direction indicated Central Europe. Finally, at 0517 UTC the Synch Detector
pulled it up long and strong enough for me to hear a man and women in French
talk with short bumper music between them. All for almost 1 minute. I got
so excited I had to run outside, smoke a cigarette (I don't smoke), and come
here to post this - LOL.

Now, this is what really makes this reception exceptional. It was
accomplished with a Sony ICF-SW7600GR portable radio (mains power - Sony AC
adapter) and the Terk AM "Advantage" Loop antenna! - LMAO! In a typical
land-locked suburban location. And BTW - anyone who says the Sony Synch
Detector doesn't do much does not listen to weak DX. Without that Synch
Detector I would be listening to a whining Het all night long. I could only
imagine what it must be like using a receiver like the discontinued Drake
R8B with a long, long-wire, beverage or large loop. All the more incentive
to try the SDR-1000 radio and homebrew a good MW DX loop antenna.

Man, am I psyched! Where is that pack of smokes?! Screw that, where is the
Vodka?! - LOL! WooHoo!

WAY TO GO BRO!! Good job. Your story reminds me of the first time, while on a DXpedition using 2000 feet Beverages, we all heard amazing stuff like that from OKLAHOMA! We logged (and later verified some of them) from Monte Carlo, France, Morocco or maybe it was Algeria, and a good number of Japanese stations taboot. You brought back some very fond memories there.Keep up the good work and get that Beverage in place.

What a GREAT reception report. I'm going to try to get Radio France
myself. I was just as excited as you were just reading your report.
