i have the opportunity to purchase a drake r8 or r8a. the r8a is about
$100.00 more. is the difference between the two worth the $100.00??
right now i am using a palstar r30CC, nice radio will i see abig
difference in performance with either the r8 or r8A.

thanks in advance, john

Get the R8A for a number of reasons: more channel memory, better
communications (many control programs wont work with the R8, only the R8A
and R8B), better ergononics with the bandwidth and modes control buttons.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with either. I'd save some more and get
an R8B.

I have an R8, and it's an average performer at best. The sync is
useless, and the "no you can't use the preamp on MW" is constantly
annoying.

My Satellit 800 routinely outperforms it.

I keep seeing them go for $1500+ on Fleabay, and I can't help but find
it hard to believe they're really worth the extra $800-1000 it costs
over an R8A from the same place.

I tend to agree with Mike. There are several refinements in the R8B
that make a significant difference, plus it's probably one of the best
modern investment radios on the market. Buy one, try it out for a few
months, and if you don't fall in love with it (unlikely), you can always
sell it for (probably) more than you paid!
