For those of use who went through CD training, Jericho is an "example
of what not to do".
The only thing this show has going is the human drama. Everything else
is too bogus
for words.

And given the lack of running water, everyone looks a damn site cleaner
then I would
expect.

So Watch the show, and enjoy the fun. It is the funniest thing since
"Voyage to the
bottom of the Sea".

Oh, like when 'Sparks', using a BC-348, monitored Radio Moscow while
at 200 Fathoms?

In one of the early episodes of 'Jericho,' though, Hawkins WAS taking
CW on HF.

I believe he was using a VHF receiver to do it, though.

FT101. It has been too long, 25+ years, since I last used an FT101, so
there
are too many versions fo me to be sure which version it is.

An early hybrid, transistor receive, vacumm tube TX. Nice beginner ham
HF rig
back then.

This show has enough humour that if I ration it correctly it will last
a decade!

How close was it? It was close enough to see overhead. Would that be
close enough?

You also don't know the kind of bomb it was. In two years there may be
an EMP bomb that has been under development and kept secret.

and the tube ones died when the electricty went out.

yet there's enough electricity to run the happy hour pub with its
ceiling mounted TV

Not after the EMP. Everthing died including the electrical grid. For
all we know that may have been the source of the EMP (which would mean
that radios still worked).

Now that there is electricity again we'll see what comes out of hiding.

Thing you have to keep in mind is that the closest thing they have to
anyone with real technical knowledge is an insane ham and a high school
science teacher with a bad memory.

They havent even set up some sort of telegraph between the bridge
and town. It does not need to be electrical, there were mechanical
telegraph systems long before electrical ones.

IMHO you are judging it as if the cold war never ended, they are
acting like it never happened. Having come of age in the 1960's
I really think it's an accurate depeciton of what would happen.

In the late 1960's I was thinking of how to turn a walk in closet
into a fallout shelter and photographic darkroom. People like the
ones in Jericho were trying to use fallout shelter loans to build
in-ground swiming pools.

FT-101z or zd to be exact. I'll have to look.

While it has it's moments, and a few "inside jokes" like the fake Rolex,
it's not really funny.

Of course it might be because I live in a safe part of a country that was
under constant missle attack for over a month. In the north, several
hundred rockets arrived each day, destorying the infrastructure, killing
people, wiping out crops and livestock and forcing people to live in
shelters for over a month.

We still are being hit with rockets in the south, killing people and
destroying homes, schools and jobs, every day.

To you it's one big joke because you are so well informed and so smart,
to me it's a prohpetic vision a world filled with ignorant people
who little or no practical education and average intelligence.

To keep it on subject that's why I check the battery in my FR-200 once
a month to make sure it will take a charge. The original one died.

On the other hand, I'm working on things that would help prevent the
ignorance highlighted in Jericho, but that's beyond the scope of this
newsgroup.

If y'all want to watch Phoney hollyweird Crap, have at it.You can find
real Civil Defense information at your libraries,or on the internet,if
you look around hard enough. When I was in school,we didn't practice
diving under our school desk because our teachers back in those days
were wise enough to know that wouldn't do any good.We would have been
roasted anyway.

Of course it will. If you were a rich idiot who bought a FAKE one.
I thought it was a great inside joke.

WHat bugged me about that scene was if you could see a high altitude
blast, complete with EMP, you probably got hit with so much raditation,
that the show wold not last the episode.

So Watch the show, and enjoy the fun. It is the funniest thing since
"Voyage to the
bottom of the Sea".

What I find is the problem with it is that the people live like there
will be a truck with food showing up tomorrow. Not very much conservation.
They expect that food will suddenly fall out of the sky. :-)

Geoff.

A multi-megatone device going off at ~400 miles up would produce
minimal
surface effect except for the EMP and the optical pulse which would
likely
fry the optic nerves of anyone looking at it. And given the double
pulse
effect of thermo-nukes, the first dimmer pulse would attract the views
attention just in time for the whammy.

You might want to take this over to misc survivial.

Real data from military studies about EMP effects and containment have
been linked to.

I will stand by my comments about it is high humour. They haven't done
anything a wise or prudent group would. An example of what to not do.

That's the whole point of Jericho. They don't seem to have a library,
the Internet is dead, etc. Not only did they look around at all,
they had no idea that they should have.

That's because Shortwave Radio and Medium Wave DX'ing
is an obsolete hobby pursued by cheap old hambone tightwads
and geeks who can't get laid.
