best longwave radios? is sony 2010 any good down here?

just curious what the LW enthusiasts are using for beacon hunting. i'm
using a palstar r30 and a kenwood r-1000 with the palstar beating the
r-1000 out. the r-1000 hold its own on the MW bands, but on LW it's no
match for the palstar. been thinking about purchasing a sony 2010
anyone with experience with this radio below 540Khz?

sincerely, john

Hi John. the 2010 is a nice shortwave receiver, but i don't think it
would
do much for you below MW. the Palstar is good. you can make it great by
adding a better power supply. the people at Palstar suggest a better
power
supply for any LW/ beacon work. check out the Palstar group on Yahoo.
lots
of good info there. i use an R30CC for beacons, and an MW550P to clean
up
the signals. works great. i added a 12 amp power supply i had laying
around,
and it does help in the lower freqs. all the long wave info you need for
the Palstar on the yahoo group. enjoy.

There's a signal in the R-1000 that desensitizes it below 2 MHz.
A DC control line (D7, D8, R87, Q8) off the MHz knob that turns on a
transistor in the IF. If you got a tunable preselector, (matched to
the strange antenna impedance for the Medium/Low Wave input), you could
disconnect this signal (pull out/clip a lead on R87).

I live in sight of a 1/4 megawatt (KOMO-1000, KIRO-710, etc.) collection
of AM transmitters, so I've never tried it out. YMMV.
