You should be able to get an E1 for quite a bit less than $500, whereas the sky is the limit for a mint 2010. If you just want a high end portable and you're not a collector of 2010's, go find a good deal on the E1. However, if you have as much as $500 burning a hole in your pocket, you might save a little bit more and buy a tabletop. |

Sony 2010 is overrated and has more appeal now as a collectible. And you
pay a premium price for that. "DJ" wrote in message . .. If you had $500, would you get a mint, late serial number Sony 2010 or a new Eton E1? |

The Sony 2010 is NOT overated! I've picked up weak SSB signals from all over
the world (Australia, USSR) from my location in Ohio. All this with a piece of wire clipped to the whip antenna. Every bit as good as the desktops... Frank "Unrevealed Source" wrote in message ... A dandy portable for its time though. dxAce Michigan USA |

Sorry, I should have said "overrated for the price". It's a fine-performing
portable, but these days you pay more than it's worth for one in mint condition, when judged on the merits of performance alone. To a collector, the value is whatever the market will bear, but for actual use the price/performance is not so good. We've all seen these going for $500 and sometimes a lot higher lately. No way it's worth that if you're looking for the best performance for the money. "Frank" wrote in message et... The Sony 2010 is NOT overated! Yes, I actually own one. No, I wouldn't spend $500 on a Sony 2010, even if
it was in mint condition. Other than notch filters, pass band tuning, and finer that 100Khz resolution, it's weak signal sensitivity even on SSB is equal to that of desktop receivers. Have I ever owned a desktop? I think an Icom R71A, Kenwood R5000, and Drake R8 would qualify... Frank "Unrevealed Source" wrote in message ... Sorry, I should have said "overrated for the price". Constantly surprises me with nothing but the built-in whip. But, I've never heard an Eton, so I can't compare. Your best bet, buy them both, and then auction off the one you like least :-) bob k5qwg |

I wouldn't spend a dime on ANY Tecsun/Eton/Grundig Chinese-made piece-of-****, after my miserable experience with that cheap crap Grundig S350 ! Now, I am perfectly happy with my Sony ICF-S10MK2 $10 receiver - **** Tecsun/Eton/Grundig ! :) |

. .. If you had $500, would you get a mint, late serial number Sony 2010 or a new Eton E1? If I had 500, I'd find an R-75, or I'd get the E1. (I have the E-1. Abysmal whip sensitivity, fine on an outdoor, FYI) Had the 2010 in the 80's-wish I hadn't sold it now, but I wouldn't get one now, not at the insane ripoff prices for what still is a 20 year old receiver. Collectors have ruined it for us poor folk. Rich |

I would say that a considerable number of knowledgeable radio people consider it to be the best portable ever made. I have owned many portables and have never found one better than the 2010. |

DJ wrote: If you had $500, would you get a mint, late serial number Sony 2010 or a new Eton E1? Well, I wouldn't pay anything close to $500.00 for a 20 year old portable, mint cosmetics notwithstanding. I owned one for 8 years. It was a very nice radio when introduced, but I think the E1 has it beat on features alone. |

Think of it like this, from the world of tabletop radios: Would you rather
spend about the same amount of money on a Sony ICF-6800WA (Orange), or a Kenwood R-5000, assuming they are both in mint condition? They sell for about the same amount, with the Sony perhaps going for a bit more. The Sony will be of more interest to a collector due to its rarity and uniqueness (although it's a hell of a fine radio also), whereas the Kenwood is going to be purchased by someone that wants more modern features and performance. Or, you could compare either to a Satellit 800, which offers comparable performance for a few hundred dollars less. The ICF-2010 is one nice radio, but is now more of interest to those that want to own a classic radio and are willing to pay a premium. Same with the Satellit 700, or many other classics. The electronics come from either mainland China or their little coastal island. Indeed I would not be surprised if it was assembled there too. Unlike the E1 which is made in Bangalore India. That is well known. Do you have any new information to offer? -- Bart |

I should have mentioned the Eton would be my choice. It has the same synchronous detector as the Drake R8B, plus passband shift and 3 bandwidths. |

If you had $500, would you get a mint, late serial number Sony 2010 or a new Eton E1? So if you had $500 to spend where would you place it? New or used, retail of eBay? Regardless of Eton or Sony. |
