Hello TMT,

IMHO you would have a hard time finding a better portable than the
2010. The new Eton E1 is getting a lot of good reviews, with a synch
detector that's rated highly, and more features than the 2010. I don't
have one however, mostly because of the price (plus it's ugly!) For
$500 I'd rather go for a tabletop.

Also, Red Sun has an interesting portable out, and will be coming out
with one in the future with synch detection (can't remember the model
numbers, but do a search of this group for "red sun".)

As far as the Error 3, that is caused by a problem with the AA
batteries that power the memory and CPU. If the batteries themselves
are okay, then you may have to *gently* bend the clips that hold the
batteries. From what I've read, this is a somewhat common problem with
the 2010. If you search the Yahoo 2010 group, you will find more
detailed descriptions and fixes for this.

Good luck, and let us know if you get another portable.

Tecsun/Eton/Grundig are now Chinese-made junk - the Eton E1 has had a
host of quality-control problems, including the batteries blowing up,
when used with the AC adaptor. The Sony ICF-2010 is/was the best
portable ever made - Sony is by far the best manufacturer. I have a
hand-held Sony ICF-S10MK2 AM/FM $10 radio, that out-performs my digital
PLL radios.

I only paid $399 for my E1 and it works great. It performs better than any
portable I've ever owned and better than a lot of tabletops I've used. No
problems in quality either. I sold my R-5000 and kept this because it
performs similarly and has a great interface. I think it was worth it.

Hmmm, this starts to make the E1 tempting. Where did you find this
price? Was it refurbished? I told myself that I wouldn't get another
portable, but this, or the Red Sun RP300, could tempt me (the E1 is
still ugly...)

I bought mine from Northland here in MN. I think that'sd the name of the
Co.? It was new and checked out by Drake. Still had the protective coating
on the dial and original box etc... I don't know if that price is still in
effect but I'd still pay $500 for it. It's a great radio and a good a DX
rig. I think those that knock it are ill informed. I've been DXing since 76
and have owned hundreds of radios and think it's a damn good radio deserving
of more credit than it's given by most that have never even tried the rig.
Five bills is not chump change but I always try rigs that are in my grasp
economicly because I'm currious and this one I felt was a winner. YMMV?

Well, I have to tell you, I have been tempted by it too, especially
since the R8B has been discontinued, and this one looks to have many of
the essential features that made the Drake so tempting. It is good to
hear more positive news about it. I'd rather have the tabletop - they
just *feel* better to me - but since performance is the ultimate goal,
perhaps a move sideways to a top-quality portable isn't such a bad
move.

RF Gain?
Noise Blanker?
Switchable RF filters (2.5, 4, 7 kHz, as I understand it) for all
reception modes (AM, AM-Synch, SSB)?

I couldn't quite tell form Universal's website...

The problem is Sony didn't hardwire one of the AA battery terminals to
the PC board. Instead they used a pointed contact on the terminal which
touches a solder pad on the microprocessor board. Over time this contact
can become unreliable, causing the AA battery circuit to open
intermittently. The microprocessor senses this problem and produces the
error message. The solution is to bypass the pointed contact on the AA
battery terminal with a short wire soldered to the microprocessor board.
This is what the other AA terminal uses. However it's not easy to access
the location where the bypass wire needs to be installed. I recall
having to completely remove the main PC board and partially remove the
microprocessor board under the main board, to get to the AA battery
terminal area. It was worth the effort though. The error message problem
is gone now on my 2010.

Sony ICF-2010 -Replacement- Eton "E1" 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Receiver with 'opinion' XM Satellite Radio

TMT,

If you could buy a Sony ICF-2010 Radio in an Un-Opened Box
aka : 'new' - "NIB" {New-In-the-Box} Today - Great ! Go For It !
- - - These so called "NIB" Sony ICF-2010 Radio usually sell for
over US$500 normally about US$750 on eBay.
- - - However, even though it is 'new' it most likely it does not
have the original Sony Manufacture's Warranty Card.
- - - The Reality is that you are most likely faced with buying a
'used' Sony ICF-2010 Radio for about $240 to $360; that has had
one or two previous owners -and- just may be not quite 100%
{Showing It's Age} - The proverbial PIAP.

So what is out-there that is as good as a Sony ICF-2010 -and-
can be bought "New" with a Full Manufacture's Warranty ? ? ?

IMHO - In today's the 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radio Market
-Only- One 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radio comes to mind :
The Eton "E1" 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Receiver with

Surprised you'd have to ask,
but there are collectors who assess value to an item
by criteria other than it's functionality.

Just kidding Bart. I'm very guilty of collecting myself and do understand
but my main point is the 2010 and the E1 are both good radios. It's just
getting harder to find a 2010 at a reasonable price and it can be a mixed
bag unless you trust who your buying from.

Remember this is 'not' a New-In-the-Box (NIB) Radio and
the eBay Description does admit to some "Issues".

OK so here is a Sony ICF-2010 Shortwave Receiver
+ KIWA Upgrades ! "RARE" ? currently listed on eBay.

Have 'fun' watching it get Bid-Up to more then the
original MSRP of $360 when it was being made.

The Eton "E1" 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Receiver with
'opinion' XM Satellite Radio.
