You will find the answer to ALE questions at this ARRL site:
http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/ale.html

There are a million links on the above page. It would be nice if someone
(in the know) could give a one word answer.

Hello:

Regarding ALE Automatic Link Establisment:

If you happen to fall across a freq. that has been extablished by an ALE
Controller for a particular conversation, would you hear it, or is it
digital ?

Thanks,
B.

When an ALE signal is tuned in on a AMS radio it sounds kind of like a
babbling brook.
In SSB it is much harder to discrib but it sounds like a bubbling
flute, bad discription, but the best I can do.

A number of digital carriers in a very small spectrum. It is very hard
to discribe a sound.
With the proper decoding software clear charactors will be displayed.
The charactors
may be plain text or encrypted.
