Shortwave Log is no more
Looks like Mr. Sillett has given up on his Shortwave Log program. His
final post to his Yahoo group was that he couldn't reproduce the problems people were having with V5 and that he didn't appreciate the tone of some of the comments he was getting. The next day, the Yahoo group was gone. Too bad. |

You know, I never used his program but the same thing has happened with
other computer programs and I can sympathize with the people who produce them. Invariably the author starts off producing the program as a "labor of love" but, sooner or later, some - sometimes many - people complain and annoy the program writer and they do it in a way that is just mean. How many of you who use a program that you have found useful have taken the time to write to the author and thank him/her for it? We cannot financially support each and every "free" program we use, but we can ALL thank the writer! It is a pity that many people - hopefully not any readers here - just don't demonstrate good manners and show appreciation for something someone else has done for them. Oftentimes we do notice a flaw or we may have a suggestion for the author and making a constructive suggestion (or even constructive criticism in a kind way) is beneficial to the author and is most often welcomed by him/her. But no one welcomes nasty comments and, frankly, there is just no call for them. If all of us would live by the "Golden Rule," wouldn't this be a far better world? As always, just my thoughts. Oftentimes, when I see a website I like and the owner of the website has
oviously done a lot of research and put in a lot of time and effort on his or her website,I email them and tell them what a nice website they have.Just last week,I emailed a guy about his M1 Garand Rifle website. cuhulin |

Jim Douglas I emailed him just before he shut down the group and thanked him for all his work. I'm sure I couldn't put up with all the flak either. I was going to download the latest version and see if I could get it going but I never got that far. I had tried an earlier version of V5 and had problems. I think it would have been worth working through the problems. Unfortunately, I deleted the one I had before attempting to download the new one. |

Agreed...there was a cadre of people on his Yahoo group who seemed barely capable of installing the software, let alone understanding that it was a work in progress (with inevitable bugs). It was tiresome even as a bystander to read their ****ing and moaning, and I can see how Robert finally got fed up with it. I really hope he takes some time to decompress, recharge his batteries, and brings SWLog back to life. I found it to be indispensable once I got the hang of using it, and as I recall from his website it had been around in one version or another since 1990(!). It was the only freeware program that I've ever found useful enough that I made a donation to it anyway. |

I know that Bob sometimes reads the postings in this group. I can
understand his decision to withdraw the program, shut down the Website and close the Yahoo support group. The grumbling in the Yahoo group was getting out of control and even though he kept releasing new maintenance versions and trying to help folks with problems, the whining continued. Bob, I want to thank you for a great program and adding the code to support my Kenwood R-5000. I will continue using it until the external database formats (HFCC, PTSW, Eibi etc.) change to the point that I can't load them anymore. Wishing you good DX and hoping one day there will be an announcement that SWLog is available once again. Roger |

The main shortwave.com website has been pulled but if you look deep enough you will find the community feature is still there. So are the online receivers if you check your remote radio client. Fortunately I still have a copy of the installer, but I can't put it up on the web as Bob has requested that all mirror sites be removed. -- Nick B. |

My guess(es) would be 1)to discourage spammers & 2)to discourage boneheads,
which, given the reason for pulling this absolutely excellent software, website & yahoo newsgroup that's been around since what, the 90's, I'd say are damn good reasons to finally have a moderated group. Besides, have you read the crap that gets posted to this NG? By far the majority of the postings have absolutely nothing to do with SWL at all & are posted by juvenile minded boneheads trying to create ripples so they feel important. Bob Sillett and I always had a good relationship, I made donations
every year to him for SWLog. This time, he was gone so quickly that I didnt even have time to say goodbye. Bob, take that last donation I made to you and go get a nice dinner and drink on me....thanks for a great program! Jim Douglas Sad to hear that. Bob has a right to be irrigated at all our kvetching. I was one of them. but I went back to version three and I am happy as a hog in slop and I said that on the list Too many of us aren't GEEKS and have no patience with a computer's innate idiosyncrasies (and I admit user-setup errors)and I think Bob shouldnt feel overwhelmed at being unable to get into each of our heads trying to solve problems I think my problem is centered around certain MSC services not being IN my computer making me unable to use some of the advanced software needed to make version 5 work I gave up and I guess Bob did too. I have been seeking a job for 3 months and I am over stressed. Bob had undergone a professional dry spell that was satisfactorily resolved as well. I got a job. Maybe we ALL need a break. . Perhaps that is a start over Yodar |
