I have replaced two capacitors on my icf-sw1 as per information found
in this group. At first everything seemed to be all right, but now the
radio will work fine the first couple of minutes, but the the audio
becomes distorted. I checked the audio on the earphone but it is also
bad. My question is, what can I do to fix this problem?

Replace all the electrolytics.

If you replaced the capacitors with tantalum type make sure you did
not overheat them. Tantalum capacitors will short out if overheated.

Yep, new batteries or using the ac adapter doesn't make a difference.

That will be a hell of a job recalling the problem to remove the smd's.
My problem is that in a cold start (if one can say that of a radio) the
audio sounds fine, but after a while becomes distorted; with earphones
too. I wonder if someone has encountered the same problem and what the
fix was.

Yea I've had them do that. I've repaired about five of those. The only way I
got em to work right was replace all the electrolytics. It's a hard job.
Just get a very fine tip iron and a light with a magnifying lens like those
desk ones.
