Yacht Boy 400 -- No Reverse-polarity Protection?
 

I did something careless (stupid) and plugged the wrong AC adapter into
my YB 400. The polarity wasn't right, and now it's dead. The digital
display and tuner still seem to work, but there's no sound. I've made
this mistake before with other devices, with no harm done. So does
anyone know, does the YB 400 not have this protection? Or clues to what
it was I fried?

You are right, this radio seems to have no such protection.

I did the same thing myself back then, but first blamed it on the AC
adapter. Then I read about the reversed polarity issue.

I was able to trade it in for an YB-500 with a little in-between. But the
YB-400 is a much better radio in my opinion...

Ok, thanks . Unbelievable that this radio didn't have such protection
.... all it would have taken is a diode and maybe a couple of other
components. You say you were able to "trade" it ... were you able to get
it back working again?

No, I asked the shop to take the radio back and "upgraded" as a thanks for
the favour...

At least now we are aware of the problem with reversed polarities in
different portable radios

The most likely component is the audio amp (LA4550), these are quite
sensitive to reverse voltage. The rest is behind some voltage regulator
at least. Check the LA5005 output to make sure it's OK.

I always take pains to be sure I use the right adapter and the polarity
is right.When in doubt,I use my Fluke multimeter.
