Storm Shelter & Shortwave.

What does storm shelters have to do with Shortwave Radios? Well, think
about it.
I am thinking, thinking about building a storm shelter in my back yard.I
can get somebody with a backhoe to dig a hole in my back yard about six
feet deep by four feet by four feet (big enough for doggy and I) and I
can buy some concrete blocks and mortar and paint the blocks with
Xypex.I can do it all myself except for the backhoe stuff.

Xypex? Almost sounds like Sodium Silicate (water glass.) Has been used
to waterproof concrete for centuries.

Obviously, when the storm hits and the electricity is off and the
radio station antennas are blown down, you will need shortwave radio
to know what's going on. Brother Stair, Pete Peters et al can offer
some last-minute advice on what to do as the crazed mobs rush toward
your bunker, thinking it a hoard of desperately-needed food and water.
Only let in attractive, nubile teen-agers. At last you will have
something going for you if you play your cards right and can remember
what to do.
PS. Only let in the girls or the boys, as is your wish, but not both.

If I build a storm shelter in my back yard,I don't plan on living in the
d..n thing.Only a space for doggy and I to get in and sit there for a
while untill the tornado threats are over.I would keep a goody bag in
there with a little battery powered flouarescent light and one of my
little portable AM/FM/Shortwave radios.I can stick up an antenna by the
storm shelter and let the antenna wire dangle down into the storm
shelter. The neighbors would have to shift for themselves,my storm
shelter would only be big enough for my little doggy and I.

On a subterranean storm shelter I would also be concerned about
sealing the door itself and about providing air, water, etc. 4x4x6
shelter would be pretty tight for more than an hour or two wouldn't
you think. Do you live in the coastal hurricane country? If so going
below ground would not seem to be a very good idea to me.

Jackson,Mississippi is 140 miles North of the Gulf Coast.
I could pour a small concrete pad/floor (I own a small concrete mixer,it
has an electric motor to drive the mixing barrell around and around.I
bought it for $100.00 at a U-Haul store years ago when they had some
things for sale) on top of the ground in my back yard and make the rest
of the shelter out of heavy concrete blocks.Probally about four by four
by four feet.A piece of steel plate hinged on top with angle iron I can
weld around the edges would be ok and it would keep the rain out.

There have been storm cellars on the prairies for 150 years. All you
need is a hole in the ground and a door. It is nice if you have a hill
to dig into but a few loads of fill will make one cheaply. All that
concrete and blocks sounds like a lot of work for a short stay. The
English used a small quonset hut during the Blitz: Maybe you can get
some ideas there.
You could use a gravel base to help drainage. The idea is to built it
with the least cost yet have it effective.

There is another stormy weather pattern in East Texas.A guy on the noon
time local Jackson tv news was talking about it.He said it will be in
this area on Thursday/Friday of this week.
