Portable IBOC/HD Radio May Be on Its Way

Before I read this article, I wasn't sold on the feasibility of HD. Most people (myself included) don't want to spend $200+ on a big radio just to hear HD radio when there's so much regular radio to enjoy without having to buy expensive new equipment. But with this new chip, HD will be available on smaller and less expensive radios, so it definitely makes HD look more possible than before. But even with these lower priced HD radios on the horizon, I still don't think HD will ever be heard by 10% of radio listeners. There's still two enormous barriers: millions of radios already sold that can never get HD, and most broadcasters simply don't have the extra money to invest in iffy HD equipment. Without the new chip, though, HD would have been dead in the water. Now it has a chance. Portable/hand-held DAB receivers in the UK are priced $100 - $200. If portable HD happens, it will be too expensive, plus consumers are not interested in HD Radio: http://www.google.com/trends?q=%22hd...o=all&date=all http://www.alexaholic.com/ibiquity.c...om+xmradio.com |

"Telamon" wrote in message ... Actually, in the real world, they won't. The standard for battery life is determined by the iPod among today's consumers. If a HD portable radio is supposed to replace an analog radio why would you compare it to an Ipod? You don't get the challenges faced by radio. The issue is making radio relevant in the coming years, during a period where already anything that is not digital is no longer cool unless you are about 60 or so. HD radios do not replace analog radios, pragmatically, because the analog portables are not being used. AM radio is not relevant to nearly anyone under 45... because it sounds bad and is analog. If nobody is listening, you can not replace anything... you are starting over in the under-45 demos. FM radio is challenged to keep relevant in the younger (12-24 in current Arbitron measurement) demographic groups, and a significant issue is being perceived as being a digital medium. HD radios do not replace anything. They become useful additions to the entertainment options, where the analog radio was not perceived that way. So, the standard against which audio, battery life, coolness and relevance will be measured is, presently, the iPod. How many kids do you see buying portable AM radios, huh? |
