Hello.

New to the newsgroup.

Just wondering . . . . What would be considered a decent desktop model for
a shortwave receiver? I am looking for something under $300 that I can
place on the desketop, to plug headphones into, that will be a decent
starting unit. Any suggestions?

Speaking of Universal Radio...

Anyone knows why they dont deliver to the EU anymore? Saw a receiver I
liked after following their site for a few months, emailed them, them
decided to give 'm a call anyway and they told me they dont sell
overseas anymore and promised they would explain over email.

The email I got, but no explanation however. Kinda sucks, prices are
much cheaper over in the USA, even after adding import tax...

Anyone knows of a good alternative to Universal Radio?

A decent (actually very good quality) tabletop shortwave receiver for
around $300 can easily be found in the used market. Just look for a
unit in good condition from Kenwood, Yaesu or Icom. There are few new
consumer grade tabletops available and none priced under $300 that I'm
aware of. You could of course set a portable radio on a table plug it
into mains power and it would work very much like a desktop radio,
although it might not handle large antennas very well.

I have never owned a Palstar or a Lowe Radio before,but Palstar built
(maybe they still do) some radios with the Lowe brand name on them,for
export to Europe.

You can purchase a computer controlled TEN TEC 320D for about $349 on
the Universal Radio website. I find it very good for DX as well as the
computer simplifies remembering all the frequencies and stations plus
the times they are on. There are also several good free ware programs to
control the unit above the Ten Tec offering.

Agreed. The RX320D is an incredible value for $350.

and Shipping it to Europe as "Used" :

* Have someone buy the Radio for you in the USofA.

* Un-Box-It and remove all the Tags and Wrapping.

* Test-It for and 24 Hours {Listen and Play with the Radio}

* Remove the Manual and 'other' Accessories from the Box and
ship them to you separately as "Used" Radio {Electronics} Parts.

* Send the Receipt, Registation and Warranty Card by separate
Letter.

* Wait-a-Week then put the Radio with just the Power Cord
back in the Box with the original packing; and Ship the Radio
to you by itself as a "Used" Radio {Electronic Equipment for
Amateur Radio Use} .

NOW - You have your Radio -but- Most likely you will not
have a Warranty that is 'valid' in Europe.

If you can go another $100 to around $400, I'd recommend a Satellit 800.
Make sure you find one with a serial number starting with 82 or greater,
that's the second generation with improvements.

Hell, heavy metals come out of the ground, and then they end up
back in the ground. They didn't seem to hurt the earth in the fist
place before we took them out.

The Europeans are concerned with lead, which is used in solder 60%/40%
lead/tin being common. Qualified products use solder with no lead in it.

If Europe was so concerned about 'lead' they shouldn't have been in 2 world
wars, shooting lead bullets all over the place :)
