Actually, there are two main branches of the domestic dog.
One branch derives from wolves and includes the German Shepherd,
Huskies, and some other breeds.
The other branch derives from Jackals and includes terriers and
some hunting dogs. I don't recall all the breeds but some big dogs
are fom Jackal origins so you can't tell by size.
The main trait of wolf-type dogs is their relationship with their
master who they see as the alpha male. They bond with their owner
in a most amazing way.
Jackal dogs are more food-oriented. They can change masters
esily as long as they get fed.
The German Shepherd is one-quarter wolf and was bred about
1890 to be a general-purpose farm dog. Huskies have been bred
in Siberia to help in the north. One of their traits is to be able to
lay around quietly for weeks if there is nothing going on. Huskies
always howl when a fire engine goes by.
I did a little experiment with Max, the German Shepherd, last night
.. He was laying at my feet, sleeping while I watched television.
I wondered if he could sense when I was looking at him. So I gazed
at him. Within two seconds, his eyes popped open and he looked
at me to see if something was up.
German Shepherds and Huskies are not good companions for
feeble, elderly ladies as they have been known to attack and
kill them in order to be leader of the pack. They are great guardians
of children.

When I was in the Army,I saw some German Shepard Guard Dogs.At the Nike
Missile Battery (Charly Battery,SL 60) where I was near Pacific,Missouri
and at Shannon Wright Compound and Tan Son Nhut.I kept my distance from
those Dogs.My Australian Cattle Dog is part Australian Dingo Dog and
Part Blue Merle Collie Dog.Australian Cattle Dogs were bred to help herd
Cattle all day long with no food and water.
