7600GR

Hello All,

New to the hobby and group and just had a quick question....am getting
no am reception in my office...is that typical or am I doing something
wrong? Just purchased a 7600GR; FM comes in fine but was looking
forward to talk radio at my desk.

Thank you in advance for your help!

That depends on how far from a window your office is;
metal buildings usually filter out A.M.

F.M. waves are smaller, hence actually penetrate buildings better

Take it outside & see how it works then . .

you might try a loop antenna or some such

The Sony is a pretty good am receiver. Make sure the little slide
switch on the left hand side is all the way up for maximum
sensitivity, and that the slide switch on the right hand side is set
for normal, not synch or ssb. The antenna is quite directional, so you
could try rotating the radio for best reception. I doubt if any other
radio would do much better. You will have to punch in the am
freqencies you want to listen to.

Dear Chris,

In most office buildings it is difficult or impossible to listen to MW
(AM) broadcasts. Electrical interference from computers, printers,
other electronic components commonly found in offices, and,
especially, fluorescent lighting all conspire to defeat AM reception
in such a location.

About the only way to minimize the interference is to install an
external antenna. I doubt if your company would allow you to actually
install a proper outdoor wire antenna and run the leadin to your desk.
If you are not too far from a window, you could try a Select-A-Tenna
Model M http://www.ccrane.com/antennas/am-an...a-model-m.aspx
which will bring in outside signals to the tunable Select-A-Tenna

and thence to your radio. It itself will work by induction - it needs
only to be placed within about six inches or less from your ICF=-
SW7600GR.

But, frankly, I think your co-workers and/or boss may take a dim view
of all this. Plus this antenna is somewhat costly. Best to try to find
something on FM or just bring in a music player. Take your '7600GR
home with you and enjoy it there. It is one heck of a great receiver.

Best,

Joe

Hi Joe....

At the risk of being flamed....since u are in Boston, wouldn't WTKK
96.9 FM do for what u wanna hear?

Also....if any FM "HD receivers" relay any news-talk AM's for their
subchannels, that may be worth your while. Check Radio Shack or other
electronics stores for HD Radios. They should be under $200 now, and
possibly you are close enough to the main station to where a small set
of rabbit ears will do.....
