Buy it now for $1,049 and help fund a retirement plan. Since the ad
doesn't state, I'm assuming those are not Kenwood filters that have
been added.

Many of the aftermarket filters are better that the stock Kenwood filters.

Let me also state here, that although I've never met Dan, I would be willing to
say that he's a first rate SWL and DX'er and is fairly well known in the

The Ebay listing states: "there is a DC power plug installed on the
back of the receiver, however there is no DC connection yet inside the
receiver".

It's been a while since I added a DC adapter to an R-5000. However, I
believe the receiver plug, internal connectors and 12v cord came as a
kit. The receiver components were installed by removing a small plate
on the receiver back. If the plug is there but there are no
connectors to the receiver board it means 1 of 2 things. Either the
connectors were snipped off, or the guts from one radio were married
to the case of another.

That does not describe a pristine radio.

I guess you'd better ask Dan to clarify that, but as far as 'pristine' goes, I'd
guess that this one is a close as one might get.

"Dxace1" your auction is now somewhat more informative. A picture of
the boxes for the Kenwood YK88a1 AM and an aftermarket Vertex CW
filter does help. So the potential bidder can guess a bit and assume
the wide position has the Kenwood AM filter, the second position is
still occupied by the standard Kenwood narrow filter, the third
position is empty and the fourth position is occupied by the Vertex CW
filter. But a simple statement saying which filters are installed in
which positions would clarify things.

And apparently the 12 volt plug was added to the back of the
receiver. It is not clear whether the internal cable with the 3 pin
connector is dangling loose within the receiver or simply missing.
Because you talk about "wiring some sort of DC capability" it makes
the reader wonder whether the internal wiring is there or not.

I note that the Buy It Now price was dropped, thereby bringing price
down to a realistic level of $399.

If his new reserve price is $800 that would certainly be ABOVE $600

But the point is still that a Kenwood R5000 with an extremely limited

I'm not in the U.S., but isn't that false advertising? If it is listed
with a minimum bid of $400, if I bid $400 and was the only bidder,
will I get the radio?

If not, IMHO that's false advertising. Since there is a hidden reserve,
you can't read his ad and determine the price. What if you went into a
store and they had the same deal? His ad states that you can bid $400
and have a chance of owning the radio, which is not true.

I know it's an eBay standard. But is it legal?

Someone in the U.S. should complain to the Federal Trade Commission,
and the consumer action groups.

The comment of course has nothing to do with a retirement plan, but is
a way of pointing out that "DXACE1" is looking for an unrealistic
price. A VHF adapter with such limited coverage really adds litle to
the value.

The new BIN price, which is probably also the reserve price is still
too high. Looks like an early retirement plan has been put on hold.- Hide quoted text -

Roadie,

Seller states "the reserve on this had to be set
at what I consider to be a more than reasonable
level ABOVE $600."

Open Bid $400 Reserve Price $600+ BIN $800

The math is more likely: Open bid = $400 BIN Price $800 = Reserve
price

If his new reserve price is $800 that would certainly be ABOVE $600

But the point is still that a Kenwood R5000 with an extremely limited
coverage VHF adaptor is not worth much more than the price of the
receiver with the optional AM wide filter installed.

Roadie,

Please Don't Read Into Something that is NOT THERE !

Seller states "the reserve on this had to be set
at what I consider to be a more than reasonable
level ABOVE $600."

Open Bid $400 Reserve Price $600+ BIN $800

$800 Buy-It-Now Price
$400 Opening Bib
--------------------------------
$200 Difference
1/3 of the Difference
--------------------------------
$67
$600
---------------------------------
$667 Reserve Price

"reasonable level ABOVE $600." :
Means over $600 but less than $700

Around $600 means close to $600 : $575~$625

Mid-$600s means Around $650 : $630~$670

High $600s means close to $700 : $675~$699

$800 BIN Means $800

Roadie,

FYI - The Winning Bid was $629 by W4EKU - Who
also had one higher bId that did not get exceeded.

Interestingly enough the prior Auction Listing for
this Kenwood R-5000 Receiver closed at $610
with NO Sale.

It closed at no sale because of the reserve. I'm truly puzzled at the
attention given the VHF converter. Not that it isn't a good quality
unit, but that the coverage is so incredibly limited.

Equally odd is pricing for the so-called Stereo Kenwood receiver.

As a long-time R5000 owner I'm glad to see these prices.

Had some tasty beer from Dogfish Head brewery this weekend too. The
IPA 90 and Raison d' Etre are a good way to wind up a summer season.
