Except it isn't true, the first 500,000 watt station was WLW in
Cincinnati Ohio, owned by Powel Crosley Jr. It went on the air at
500KW in 1935.

You don't need a super power TX to create this kind of chaos. At
KOEL, we were a 5kw regional with the major lobe squirting the power
north. Off the north end of the site, close enough that the guy ran
right to the fence, and on the other side, a developer built a high end
subdivision. Well, high end for that area. And the first house was less
than 50 feet from the fence.

About once a month we had to go out and detune refrigerators, water
pipes, bathtubs, toasters and especially the chain link fence...all of
which were making quite audible music from our transmitter.

The biggest problem we had was with the house by the fence. The owner
had cleaned up the garage and put in flourescent lighting....that he
couldn't turn off.

He had to remove the tubes in order to get dark in his garage.

Night was no better. The pattern was less than 5 degrees wide,
concentrating on a few houses adjacent to the property. We got calls
almost every night.
