Hippoman, I enjoy the "tacky theater" of carney-Barkers as much as
anyone, but an Eduardo/Gleason sideshow would be a little harder to take. Let's imagine the pitch from a tattoo-festooned Mr. David (may God forbid): "Step right up, morons, and witness the DECLINE AND FALL of an entertainment medium YOU USED TO LIKE, BUT NOW DESPISE, like me!! You're all hopelessly stupid, so c'mon up here and give it a whirl - fritter away the HARD-EARNED CASH you scrape from your PITIFUL, MISERABLE, NO-FUTURE hourly jobs, while you stuff lard-and-salt filled MIDWAY-TYPE ALLEGED-FOOD down your pitiful fat little kids, who EVEN AS WE SPEAK are SILENTLY SUFFERING the premature onset of diabetes and arteriosclerosis BECAUSE OF YOUR LACK OF PARENTING SKILLS!!" Etc., etc...... Y'know, even though Mr. "Eduardo" reserves a special vitriol for AM radio in general, and analog AM radio (and its licensees) specifically, he doesn't even appear to like FM that much either. I think Captain Spanglish is symptomatic of the type and quality of radio industry executives who have produced the unhappy near-term future which - if pundits are to be believed - is casting a pall of gloom over AM & FM radio. They sit enthroned in powerful positions they've demanded for themselves via lobbyists and a hapless, compliant FCC, pontificating endlessly about Arbitron PPMs, the dogma of HD, whining about competition from satellite they've brought on themselves, all the while trashing the human components of creative people and...ahem....LISTENERS, whom they alternately condemn and ignore. Small wonder they've run out of ideas about how to make the medium work. http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index....html#msg616052 |
