Icom 746 Pro as SW Receiver

How does the Icom 746 Pro's receiver compare to some of the medium to
high-end DSP-based SW receivers, such as the JRC NRD-545 and the
TenTec DX-340?

I'm mostly interested in LW and MW DXing--how does the 746 perform on
these bands?

It seems to me that the 32-bit DSP and 24-bit AD in the 746 are a cut
above the JRC and TenTec, but does this translate into better real-
world RX performance?

I have not owned the PRO, but did own the original 746 in addition to all
the 756's- have the 756PRO III now. They are all deaf below 500KHz because
of the HPF Icom switches in when tuning MW and lower. I seem to recall the
PRO's (756) also have an attenuator that is automatically switched in around
1.5MHz. I use a Palomar LF converter on the RX only port for LF reception on
the PRO III.

That's a showstopper for me if it can't be fixed. Is there a published
mod to un-cripple performance below 1500 KHz?

Anyone here have any real-life experience using the 746 or 756 as an
SWL receiver? If so, I'd love to hear about it.

The 746Pro makes a great SWL DX receiver. I think it is better than a
756 Pro. I have not tried the 756 Pro II or III.

The ergonomics on the JRC NRD545 are much better than the 746Pro. Or
just about an receiver I have used.

In terms of DX performance & audio recovery.... the 746Pro is really
hard to beat.

All IMHO

Also the VHF coverage on the 746Pro includes the Military "Victor" Air
to Air band. Approx 138-143 mhz. If you have any MilAir communications
in your area the AM receive on these signals is fantastic.

BTW soda if you would like to look at my modest listening shack go to
www.QRZ.com and lookup my callsign kg4big as I have a picture there.
