The Radio's Whip Antenna

* Just What Is It ?
* Making It Work Better !

The Headphone's Lead and the Whip Antenna may be viewed
as a Dipole {Hertz} Antenna of sorts : Since they would
be of 'about' Equal Length.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dipole_antenna

Back to the Radio and it's Whip {Marconi} Antenna
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whip_antenna
http://www.ycars.org/EFRA/Module%20C/AntVert.htm
The Whip Antenna is the Antenna Element and the combined
Electrical Circuity of the Radio is the Counterpoise
{Ground Plane}. Clearly the Whip Antenna is a much better
Antenna Element; then the Radio is an effective Ground
Plane. In effect the Radio's Ground Plane is all crumbled
up into a relatively small area.
-Note- This is considering the Radio itself {Stand-A-Lone}
Powered only by Batteries. [No AC]

Using another much Longer Wire with the Radio creates a
very effective Counterpoise to the Radio's Whip Antenna.
-IF- This Long Wire Counterpoise is Used -and- the Radio's
Whip Antenna is Collapsed or Removed -then- Things are
often reversed and the Longer Wire becomes the Antenna
Element and the Radio once again becomes the ineffective
Counterpoise.

Grounding the Radio itself : Grounding the Outer-Ring of
the Radio's Earphone Jack can also improve the Ground /
Counterpoise with respect to the Radio's Whip Antenna;
and thus can often cause an Improvement in the Reception
of the Radio.

Other "Observations" of Improved Radio Reception :

* Connecting an AC Power Cord and using AC Power

* Connecting an AC Adapter and using AC Power

* Connecting a Wire to the Radio's Whip Antenna

* Touching the Radio with your Hand

* Putting the Radio on a Metal : Desk Top , Shelf or TV Tray

HOW TO : Building a Simple Basic 'Mini' Dipole Antenna
for most 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radios.

Buy an FM Folded Dipole Antenna the type made from
300 Ohm TV Twin Lead.
* Connect an Alligator Clip to one of the Leads of the
FM Folded Dipole Antenna
* Connect Rear-Barrel of an 1/8" Mono-Plug to the 'other'
of the Leads of the FM Folded Dipole Antenna {Remove the
Tip of the 1/8" Mono-Plug}
* Stretch-Out the FM Folded Dipole Antenna in the shape
of a "T" across/near a Window or on an Outside Wall
* Insert the Rear-Barrel-End of an 1/8" Mono-Plug into
the Radio's Headphone Jack
* Attach the Alligator Clip to the End of the Radio's
Collapsed Whip Antenna

IMHO - This 'Mini' Dipole Antenna usually out performs
the Radio's Whip Antenna and is a Easy-to-Use and a
very Transportable "Travel Antenna".

TIP - This is also a Good {In-Door} "Storm" Antenna
when the Weather is bad and you do not want to Risk
Using an Out-Side External Antenna due to Lightning.

This is basically what's happening with a rod antenna:

David,

Yes many 'portable' AM/FM Shortwave Radios do incorporate
a DX Switch {RF Pre-Amplifier} which effectively makes their
built-in Whip Antennas an Active Antenna.

The Grundig Satellit 800-M and Eton E1 Radios come to mind.
