Default ATTN: AOR 7030+ owners - i need help!

i picked up an aor 7030 plus the other day and the only thing i
receive on it is hiss - i've tried all antenna inputs and i don't even
get crackling from the radio when i connect the antenna - all menus
and front controls are working fine - am i missing something? - this
is a pretty deep radio regarding menus - is there a mute or control
buried in this menu set that maybe i'm missing - i've done multiple
resets which defaults the radio back to the factory settings - still
no stations. this is a great radio - built like a rock and i like the
feel of it - now if i can only get it to hear - hey pete are you
hearing me?? any help is greatly appreciated - thanks in advance and
happy holidays.

There is an antenna switch on the back, selecting between the whip,
wire, and 50 ohms input. Start there.

bad switch maybe? i am aware of the switch and have been toggling it
everytime i switch antennas - its as if there is no signal getting to
the radio - when i tune across the am band or anyband there is no
change in audio level - just a steady hissing.

You should get something, at least noise, right away. The antenna
inputs are selectable on the back. Wiggle the switch, just in case. You
should at least get some noise when that's happening.

The menus are for frequency shaping tool selection, and RF Gain. If
RF Gain is turned down you'll get nothing. But that's easily correctable.

Turn the radio on, press the RF-IF button. You should see the word
'Gain' on the display. There's an encoder below the word 'Gain' and a
number expressed as percent(%) above. Turn the encoder until you see the
Gain percentage rise. You should hear noise. Connect an antenna and wail.

Now, if the number is already at a percentage above 50%, and you hear
no thermal noise without an antenna connected, you may be in trouble.

But try the Filter button before you panic. Press it once, then cycle
through the installed filters with the RF-IF button. There should be no
empty holes. And if you have a dead filter (highly unlikely) you'll get
something in the way of noise when you cycle through the other three.

Check all these with a headphone connected, as well. You may have a
dirty headphone jack. That would interrupt the internal speaker. As
would the external speaker jack. Plug a speaker in there and see if you
get something.

To reset the radio to its default, turn the radio on, turn the
encoder with the two arrow above it a little counterclockwise until the
on the display it says "Dflt Set", and press the button with the * above
it.

That will bring you back to out of the box conditions.

If none of this works, check with a service center for this radio.

Dear John,

Try all the suggestions above first. If one of them works for you,
fine. If not, try this: first ascertain whether your radio includes
the Notch Filter/Noise Blanker option. (If you are not sure, or cannot
determine this, then you MUST assume you do NOT have the option
installed.) If it is NOT installed, then access the configuration menu
(full directions for this are in the owner's manual) and go to first
the Notch Option - make sure the setting is NO; then go next to the NB
Option and make sure that setting is NO too.

If you do NOT have the Notch Filter/Noise Blanker option and EITHER
setting is set to YES, you will have NO audio output from the
receiver. Setting the radio back to Default will NOT correct this.
This setting must be properly configured manually.

If you then hear signals, at that point you will know for sure that
you do not have this option installed.

Also -- make sure the volume is turned up to at least 50%! You might
also want to try an external speaker connected from the jack on the
back. This jack, like the front headphone jack, could also be causing
a problem.

Should all of the above not help you, or if you do in fact have the NF/
NB option installed and still you hear no signals, then I'm afraid you
will need to send the set back to AOR-UK for repairs.

Please let us know the outcome.

Best,

Joe

John e-mailed me about this unit.............when he changes the I.F.
bandwidth, the pitch of the internal receiver noise does change, indicating
that everything from the I.F. strip through the audio is working. Hopefully,
it isn't that 1st mixer that is blown. It appears that the SD5400 is now
considered an oblolete item. That's the easy part. It could also be a
failure in the synthesizer that provides 1st LO injection, but that is
probably unlikely.
John also told me that the backup battery has leaked, so hopefully none of
the plated through holes on the controller board have been damaged from
corrosion.

Dear Pete,

No wonder the previous owner sold it!

I talked to John earlier tonight. The problem with his receiver turned out
to be a bad Ni-Cad backup battery. After he removed the battery and cleaned
up the chemical leakage. The receiver came to life after doing a default
reset.
Good work, John!

I suppose those of us with early models will eventually have this
problem. If you can write something up on what to fix, I'd appreciate
it.

Dear Sir,

I bought my AOR AR7030 'Plus' new in March 2004. In March 2009 (after
five years), I plan to open the case and check the "looks" of the
backup battery. After that, I plan to do this examination yearly.
Also, of course, I will note any possible performance changes that
could be attributable to the battery. If the battery in fact does last
ten years, then no matter, I will replace it. That's cheap insurance!

Best,

Joe
