Sony car shortwave radio again -- Performance question

Guys,

I guess I need to clarify a bit about my earlier statements about
"having the engine turned off!!". There was fair number of stations
(albeit CRI, Radio Australia, RNZI, BBC, NHK Japan etc) that I could
listen to while driving, but when it faded at a certain point the
vehicle ignition / electric / motor noise would come through at certain
low revs / idle / cruising speed.

I did not attempt to try any noice / electronic condensor on the power
supply etc as it usually was not too bad. Its just I usually am
stationary on the side of the road / camping when playing with the
shortwave :)

The other bad thing for my Pajero 4x4 is the antenna is it has an
Electric Antenna, and so possible if I fitted a larger am/fm whip it
may MAY yeild better results.

But I also am interested to hear from other people who have installed a
SW car radio to gauge how it performed for them while driving :)

Cheers
Mark

Can others tell me about the level of performance achieved? For SWLing with
the car turned OFF, I'll just bring along my ICF-2010.

I don't want to do serious DXing on the car radio, but I do want to hear
major international outlets while driving around. If that's not feasible,
it's not worth the price.

Thanks!

Sony car shortwave radio again -- Performance question

G'day All,

Well I've returned back to Canberra and have now been able to get a
couple of videos done to show the Sony CDX-GT260 AM/FM/SW Car Radio in
action.

Video1:

Quick scan of SW2 from 9500 khz to 17500 khz. I just used quick scan,
and am sure there would have been a fair few more stations picked up if
I had manually scanned. - its a 15mb video approx 3min 30sec.

Video2:

Shows what happens when the car starts / is running. Like I've said
earlier a power supply filter / condenser may help fix this, but I
haven't needed to worry about this. - its 5mb ~ 1min 30 sec

Picture 1:

Shows the external AM/FM whip antenna. Looks very similar to a 27mhz cb
antenna.

Hope this helps

Mark

Sony car shortwave radio again -- Performance question

Thanks!

I'm impressed that its Seek function always lands on the signals, not 5 kHz
short of them.

Your engine interference may be coming in through the antenna, which is not
shielded from the engine. I'm planning to use my regular radio antenna and
replace it with a longer one if needed. In my part of the world there's a
lot of Spanish on the radio (everybody aims for Cuba, and I'm close enough),
and in general I think there's more on shortwave here than in the Pacific
Rim region.

This is very useful information. There's a Singapore dealer who advertises
these on eBay -- do you know anything about him? The alternative is
"Shortwave Store" in Canada, with a much higher price. We Americans
apparently aren't supposed to have shortwave radios in our cars, according
to Sony :)

Sony car shortwave radio again -- Performance question

G'day MC,

Sorry mate I don't know anything about the EBAY seller as I haven't
needed to have any dealing with them. However The Canadian store I've
had dealings with as it was them whom I purchase the Sony XR-5100 tape
deck AM/FM/SW radio from back in 2005, and they were very helpful.

The only reason why it was somewhat financially viable for me was that I
was going to Hawaii on Holiday and it the only cost a few dollars to
ship it to the Hawaiian Hotel and the CAD$ was on par with the AUS$.

Back in 2005 I was in a similar position in that I had the options of
getting the radio from Asia or Canada/US. However I was totally
surprised to see these radios selling at my local auto store and why I
quickly snapped up two, I've just checked the original boxes they came
in and I actually purchased the (GT260 and GT360) not the GT160 as I
originally thought :)

Regards
Mark

Interesting! Do you know of any mail-order suppliers in Australia that
might have this radio and be willing to send it to America? I just checked
Jaycar Electronics and they don't seem to sell car audio.

Sony car shortwave radio again -- Performance question

MC,

I bought my two from the local auto store called "SuperCheap" they may
be willing to do business international however not sure of anyone else
locally.

That said, I did a google on GT260 "Australia Only" search and found this:

http://www.ryda.com.au/Sony-CDX-GT16...p/cdxgt160.htm -
AUD$ 130

http://www.ryda.com.au/Sony-CDX-GT26...p/cdxgt260.htm -
AUD$ 170

http://www.ryda.com.au/Sony-CDX-GT36...p/cdxgt360.htm -
AUD$ 187

Now when I attempted to proceed through the check out, it only allowed
me to select "Australia" for country. But maybe attempt to send them an
email to see if they may do any international order ?????

Regards
Mark
