Differences in Sony 7600G and 7600GR (sync detection)

Has anybody noted differences in the way the Sony's handle sync detection??

I have had a 7600G, and now found a 7600GR at a sale...

I've noticed that no 2 are alike. The alignment for sideband symmetry
is especially troublesome. Not impressed.

Differences in Sony 7600G and 7600GR (sync detection)

Dear Sir,

I own seven examples of these radios: two '7600Gs and five '7600GRs,
all purchased new (from Universal and Amazon) between 1998 and 2005.
While the feature sets are different between the two models (the
'7600GR being superior), the overall reception and the synchronous
detection circuits are absolutely identical in performance.

I have heard of some sync alignment problems with this model but most
of them seem to occur with either early examples of the '7600G (which
had quite a bit of teething pains when first introduced in 1994) and
examples of the '7600GR bought used, especially those bought from from
private individuals on an online auction site.

This opinion is, of course, based solely on what I have read. While I
am certain that there may have been a few '7600GRs, bought new, which
may have had some problems (just like any other item made in this
world), I believe this number is VERY small and that is based upon my
own personal experience over a number of years. Thus I have had no
personal experience whatsoever with any problems with any of these
radios which, in my opinion, are built exceptionally well and will
hold up very well indeed IF GIVEN REASONABLE CARE and that includes
the performance of the synchronous detection circuit which is spot-on
on all of my units. It is my opinion (and my OPINION only) that many
of these radios being sold on auction sites have NOT been given proper
care - and that is why the owners are selling them. It would seem very
strange that I should buy so many over several years (different lots)
and not have any problems at all but others claim to have had them.
Surely, while a few people might possibly have gotten a defective new
unit, this would be taken care of under warranty. That is why I feel
that these used units have been given substandard care and why a new
owner (P. T. Barnum said it all!) might think poorly of the radio
when, in fact, it is not the radio's fault at all, the fault lying
with the previous owner.

If I were you, I should be VERY careful in buying a used unit UNLESS
you personally know the seller and his/her habits in taking care of
his/her possessions. After all, the price of a NEW one, complete with
a one-year manufacturer's warranty and a dealer who wants your future
business, is only about $150.00. If you can't afford that just now,
save up until you can. If you can afford some money now for a used
one, you need only save up the difference between what you have now
and the price of the new one.

I hope the above is of some use to you and that you will carefully
consider my comments (which, again, are only MY opinion - others may
and will disagree).

I wish you the best of luck.

Joe
