They're trying to finalize the engineering of the radio so that it
begins failing after about thirteen months, just after the warranty
runs out.

Yes, that sometimes happens with Sony products. I know personally a
gentleman whose Sony digital camera died after about thirteen months
and they told him it would cost about $200.00 to repair. In polite
company, I cannot repeat what he told Sony about their products and
their company. He did not have it fixed; he bought a new digital
camera, NOT a Sony!

But my own personal experience with nine (9) Sony shortwave radios
(two ICF-SW7600Gs, two ICF-SW35s, and five ICF-SW7600GRs) has been
fully satisfactory. My oldest one is about ten years old now and still
functions as new, as do all the other ones. Therefore, I have never
had any dealings with the Sony service department. But I am given to
understand that those who DO have such dealings are left with a sour
taste in their mouth.

But I can say that, again in my own experience (only), Sony shortwave
radios are made with a great deal of integrity. That appears to be
something one can NOT say about Eton/Grundig products, certainly their
more expensive radios (Grundig Satellit 800, Eton E1 [especially], and
so forth.

And isn't it funny how they ALWAYS announce these new, expensive
models, advertise them heavily (see this month's MONITORING TIMES and
POPULAR COMMUNICATIONS for the Grundig Satellit 750), announce an
introduction date, and then they either do NOT actually make the
product at all (see all the advertisements in PASSPORT TO WORLD BAND
RADIO 2008 Edition for the Grundig Satellit 1000) or they "postpone"
the introduction and make you wait, and wait, and wait, and wait.

Certainly in the case of the Eton E1, it APPEARS that the wait was NOT
worthwhile. The Grundig Satellit 800 is more problematic in that
regard; quite a few were well-made and, even among those which were
not (including my own), it appears that after this model has been
fixed by Drake, it STAYS fixed, something, apparently, that cannot be
said of the E1.

I would not hold my breath while waiting for the introduction of the
Grundig Satellit 750 nor would I be "the first kid on my block" to buy
one!

Best,

Joe

Eton's website had the June date weeks ago, but NOW says COMING IN
2008. So the June date has already been changed.

ALL of my radios from Eton has been trouble free and work the way they
are supposed to work.
