Finally, I bought a radio!! :)

Friends,
I was going crazy trying to decide which radio to get. All of you
wonderful friends gave me so much to consider. I would find one and
then research and find something that scared me. I was going to get
the upcoming Grundig Satellite 750, but it really would not suit my
desire for a portable to take to parks and stuff.
I came across the Sangean ATS-909 and found a DEAL on Amazon. Most
of their stock was around $250+. However, one seller has it for $91
NEW! I decided based on research and that deal to go with it. I hope I
am not making a mistake. Also, keep in mind this is my first real SW
radio and if I am truly bitten by the bug, I will end up getting the
Satellite 750 for my home use, down the road.
Check out this page and while the top says around $250, scroll down
about half way and you will see the $91. It came to about $97 with
s/h.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...G/ref=dp_olp_2

Finally I can return to studying music at college. At night when I
should have been practicing, instead I was reading The Passport to
World Band Radio. I hate to see what happens when the radio arrives!
Thank all of you so much and I will continue to be present here and
thank you for answering repeat questions that I hope did not appear,
for lack of a better word, stupid.

Best to you always,
Haci

Finally, I bought a radio!! :)

The ATS-909, AKA the Radio Shack DX-398, should provide tons of
enjoyment. FWIW, here are some suggestions:

1. Use the windup antenna for extra sensitivity. Some critics have
suggested that the 909/398 is not that sensitive. But, my experience
is that 25' of even internal wire makes the radio as sensitive as the
best of current portables. The radio also handles external antennas
better than most portables.
2. Consider the sensitivity mod that can be found among the files of
the DX398 Yahoo group. I had a 909 with that mod and it may have been
one of the most sensitive portables I've ever owned. I sold the 909
and kept an un-modded 398. I sure wish I hadn't done that.
3. Consider buying 8 rechargeable AA batteries and a recharger. If the
909/398 has a major weakness, it relates to how it devours batteries.

Enjoy!

Mike

I tend to agree. I think Amazon will protect him for losing money. And
who knows, maybe it is a great deal. It just doesn't make sense though
for one vendor to charge so much less that the others.

Amazon does backup what goes on there.
If you don't get what you order, your account
has a place to file a claim, after the paperwork
is done Amazon reimburses you. I had to do
this once and Amazon took care of it easily.

Didn't Radio Scrap close out their DX-398 for around $100? It's the equivalent
of the Sangean ATS-909.

I picked one up several years ago at close out, but returned it within a month
as I didn't think it was very sensitive.

PRICE
FWIW - I always throught that the Sangean ATS-909
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0000228GG/
with an OnLine Discount Price of $200+ was 'over-priced'
when compared to the Sony ICF-SW7600GR Radio

FEATURE
The Sangean ATS-909 Radio's SSB is a nice feature

Friends,
I placed the order and did an online back transfer which it said
everything was alright and the order completed. That was on April
28th. As of this writing, the money has not been deducted from my
account. I have copied the complete ad with print screen, I have the
confirmation e-mail and all of that. I wonder if they can say it was a
misprint and not give me the radio for that money?
I thought it was odd that the same company also offered the same
thing for like 250+. I probably will not get it and I am becoming very
disillusioned by all of this.

The synch feature on the 7600 I had for few days didn't do anything.
That and the lack of a tuning knob made me replace it with a 909 and I
later added the 398 realistic. It's been a few years and both sets are
still working fine.

I find the sync feature exceptionally useful on the 7600G & 7600GR. I
do prefer having a tuning knob, however. But of the compact portables
with tuning knobs that are on the market today, the Eton E5/Grundig G5
is probably a better choice than the '909. The E5/G5 has better
sensitivity off the whip and the tuning knob isn't plagued by
chuffing. And the price is much better than that of the Sangean.
That's my take on it, at any rate.

My Sony ICF-SW7600GR Radio's AM-Sync works very
well for my Program Listening needs.
http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...able/0360.html

But you are right the Lack of a Tuning Knob is a draw
back of the Sony ICF-SW7600GR Radio : So with it I
use the 100 Memories more then with other Radios;
and the 5 kHz Frequency Step for the Shortwave Bands
gets me from one Broadcast Program Frequency to
another with easy.

The US Circuit City seems to have those for 99 dollars. I will keep an
eye on the Canadian version (The Source) to see if they are having the
same sale. The G5 is now 150 dollars, which is pretty good, but another
fifty dollars less would make it a mandatory purchase.

Greetings: did you go to Radio Intel, and Eham on the internet and
check the reviews for the Katio KA1102, or Degen DE1102?
Passport to World Band Radio rates it pretty highly and gives it
the "Editor's Choice"

I own the Panasonic FR2200, the Sony 7600D also sold as the
ICF2002, (bought the 7600D back in the eighties... still like brand
new.. works great, certainly got my money's worth) :) , Eton E5, Eton
E100, the Kaito KA1102 and KA11, and a couple other radios, and I
like them all, but the Kaito KA1102 is probably my favorite right now
for compactness in travel, and features.

You might want to check it out.,..
Best regards..

Friends,
I was going crazy trying to decide which radio to get. All of you
wonderful friends gave me so much to consider.
It came to about $97 with
s/h.http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...G/ref=dp_olp_2

Finally I can return to studying music at college. At night when I
should have been practicing, instead I was reading The Passport to
World Band Radio. I hate to see what happens when the radio arrives!
Thank all of you so much and I will continue to be present here and
thank you for answering repeat questions that I hope did not appear,
for lack of a better word, stupid.

Best to you always,
Haci

It has to be used - there's not much to listen to on SW anymore. I
wouldn't invest more that $25 in a SW radio, such as the Kaito WRX911.

HdV,

-If- This is not a typo and you in-fact receive the Sangean
ATS-909 AM/FM Shortwave Radio for $91.88 then you
Saved : $297.12 (76%) according to Amazon.Com.

Actually, I paid a total of $97.00. I got a copy of the bill or
receipt today via e-mail. It states it is BRAND NEW and I copied all
of the pages with Print Page in case something turns up wrong, I am
covered.

And I am excited too!

NOTE - Per Universal-Radio.Com the MSRP is : $399.95
