Ham Radio 'existed' before the so-called "Sound Card".

For that matter Radio was 'history' way before the "Sound Card".

The sound card makes decoding fax, rtty, etc. signals a lot easier. Let
software do the translation instead of buying a dedicated piece of
equipment for each type of signal. A sound card saves money.

May I suggest a few links?

- The point of amateur radio is to not "just listen",

The word "listen" doesn't appear in the name of the group. The hobby is
about technical skills. Any mouth-breather can buy fancy radios and
string up a wire and hear a 100,000 (and up) Watts radio station from
the other side of the world; it takes a lot of skill and a lot of luck
to see someone typing on a keyboard in New Zealand working the Pacific
Northwest on 5 Watts. PSK31 is more efficient than CW.

Trust the drunk to associate ham radio with 'psychic' phenomena. I
notice the lower case lettering is in addition to the formerly all caps.

And clearly you do not listen.

-*The hobby is about technical skills.

Honestly the 'hobby' in it simplist form
it is basically listening to the radio.

-*Any mouth-breather can buy fancy radios and
- string up a wire and hear a 100,000 (and up)
- Watts radio station from the other side of the world;

That is what makes Shortwave Radio Listening (SWL)
a common-man's Hobby -cause- any mouth-breather
can do it and enjoy it : Without getting into becoming
a Techno-Phobic Zealot.

-*it takes a lot of skill and a lot of luck to see someone
- typing on a keyboard in New Zealand working the Pacific
- Northwest on 5 Watts.

For the simple ENJOYMENT of Listening to the Radio
skill and luck are basic :
* Skill Turn-On the Radio
* Luck to Turn-In something to Listen to and Enjoy.

-*PSK31 is more efficient than CW.

Nothing more 'basic' {efficient} then the Sound of Voice,
Song and Music to the Human Ear -and- We All Can Do It ! :o)

Dave,

For Me Life is Simple : All I need is a Radio with
a built-in Speaker : NO SOFTWARE REGUIRED.
