Default wire plus mfj-1020c question

A single wire uses the ground as the "other half", and usually works
better with a ground, or a counterpoise wire. Since this only carries radio
wave level voltages and currents, it can be a small wire.

I don't know where the ground connection is on my 7600GR. I did
notice that the MFJ-1020c has a ground connection on its rear panel.
Will it be enough to connect a wire to the MFJ's ground connection, or
does it need to attached directly to the receiver?

Also, where do I put the other end of the wire? Should it go outside
into a grounding rod in the ground, or can the wire simply hang there?

If you do, do not do anything with the shield at the antenna end except
seal it so that rain and snow won't get into it. Where it enters the house,
ground the shield. To keep things cheap, you can use rg-6 (TV) coax, F
connectors and an F connector grounding block. Make sure the grounding
block is OUTSIDE the house and follow any building codes about grounding
it.

I like this idea. Will the F connector on the RG-6 fit into the
SO-239 jack of the MFJ-1020c? If not, I will probably solder a banana
plug to the RG-6 and use that to connect it.

What ever you do, unplug the antenna from the tuner when not using it
if possible, especialy during thunderstorms.

WHen I unplug the coax from the tuner, where does the coax go? Is it
dangerous the unplugged coax is simply dangling there? Should I attach
it to something?

Thanks for all of your advice Geoff. Very helpful indeed.

Geoff.
