Beyond the Fairness Doctrine

At a time when cultural production has been exploding, fueled by
increasingly diverse and participatory new media, we would be stepping
back toward the days when the broadcast media were a centralized and
cozy public-private partnership.

[ Like a Fannie & Freddie MAC and Socialist anti-iBiquity
diktators. ]

[...]

Incidentally, Trinity Church, the controversial house of worship that
Obama0 attended until May, is affiliated with the United Church of
Christ, a body that has been heavily involved with the media reform
movement. During the last few years, the church has urged the FCC to
limit product placement on television, to refuse to renew the licenses
of stations that don't offer enough children's programming, to let
more low-power radio stations on the air, to block media
consolidation, and—yes—to restore the fairness doctrine.

The Fairness Doctrine isn't being restored, Obama is against it, and
almost no (if any) senator or representative backs it.

It's just fear mongering by far-right radio talk show host to rile up
their audiences. The far right talk show hosts know that keeping their
audience ****ed off and in fear also keeps them tuned in. So they got
to keep coming up with stuff.

Of course, you didn't read a single line in the artcile.
Probably because you have the typical Liberal Fascist attention span
of a 3 year old.

Heil Hitler! [get used to it]

Why would I have to? There are 100's of articles about the "Fairness
Doctrine" all over the web. I've read all the arguments. Again the
republican radio talk show hosts are harping on this to **** off their
audience and get them to listen. The far right talk pulled the same
scare tactics when Clinton was elected in 1992.

Of cour$e we all know the real rea$on why con$servative talk $how ho$t
would be oppo$ed to the Fairne$$ doctrine.

The Fairness Doctrine isn't coming back.

Remember, fear is what the far-rights uses to keep their audience, not
fact.

Even if it did, it would not affect talk shows. Talk has been primarily
conservative since it's inception, and was so during the reign of the
doctrine. I don't recall a single talk station (and I used to listen to
several back in the day) that fell afoul of the doctrine. The stations that
did were quite overtly pushing a particular candidate or issue during an
election cycle.

I remember the same. I remember WCBM radio in Baltimore going to a far-
right talk format around 1983. The only thing I really remember about
the Fairness Doctrine was on TV when their producer would give a
political opinion, and then someone from the public would be given
equal time to oppose that opinion.

Gone are the days of Rush Limbaugh being on shortwave... remember
that?

The question is though, why has AM liberal talk radio been such an
epic failure? Myself I think it's two fold, most liberals get their
news and opinions elsewhere & AM radio listening audience tends to be
older and/of blue collar.

I've noticed a trend of AM stations also going to sports talk over the
past decade or so.

Your premise is flawed. Progressive Talk does better than Sports in
most markets. Ed Schultz beats Sean Hannity in some towns.

Usually the hate radio is on flamethrowers and the Progressive Talk is
on the regional or local channels.
